Two friends of mine have the S5600 and it's a nice camera.
If you're new to photography, maybe the S6500fd could be better for you.
The S9600 is almost certainly more advanced (controls, etc.), but at that price, I'd consider a dslr (you wouldn't have the big zoom but better high iso quality and better expansion capabilities).

I've got S5600 great camera for messing about, my daughter 11 still uses it but shes trying to upgrade to my camera.
I looked into getting S9600 yes would be great camera to learn on, its not too complicated. Auto is easy so you can work on catching great images, then later work in more manual mode.
Plus side
no expensive lenses
4 AA batteries you can pick up anywhere (recharchable 2500 are best)
