Hi all. I would put this in the Beginners forum but it's locked.

My new purchase is the Finepix S5800. Now this is a whole new camera from what I've used in the past. My main frustration with it is aperture... or lack of. I've tried what I think are the appropriate settings (using the 'A' setting on the dial) and adjusting the aperture in the LCD window via the joypad dial. Every photo I take looks exactly the same, no DOF whatsoever, this is frustrating me a lot. I'm now starting to think that part of the camera is faulty? I'm in 2 minds whether to take it back all together, but I don't want to, I really want to learn the camera and stop using the AUTO setting.

Can anyone please help a thick noob..:D:bonk::bang:

Thanks..
Chris.

Hi, I don't know much about the S5800 but I have the Finepix e900 and it's almost impossible to get DOF with this even at the widest aperture. It depends on the size of the sensor. For example f4 on a creative compact is equivalent to f8 on DSLR. The only way I have got around this is to zoom the camera in and stand further back. The longer the focal length the more DOF you can get.

I use an S7000 and have similar trouble. As above, I find using telephoto improves things. I have also had pretty good results with macro.

This was the main reason I flogged my s6500 and got my 30D DOF effects just are not an option on the small sensors unless you focus on a flower 10cm from the end of the lens with a background a few yards further back!
