Free studio hire in Bradford in January

Our studio is currently 3700 sq ft, high ceiling, mostly black. We're in the process of redecorating and enlarging it, and we expect to get the work finished by Xmas.

To get to the point, during January it will be available to any TP member who wants to use it, complete with (as you might have guessed) plenty of lighting, free of charge. I'll be happy to spend a limited amount of time helping people too, if required.

There is a catch, the studio is part of our warehouse, it's a big warehouse so there is no heating. That's the only catch though, and the only restriction is that you can't use it for nude photography.

After January we may still make it available free of charge, but it's use will be restricted - so if you'd like to try out or improve your studio photography in pretty well ideal conditions, this is the time to step forward.

I will check my rota for January - I've hit a very dry patch with my photography (due to work/house renovations) and this may be exactly what I need to kick start it!

Someone sent a PM asking why we're doing this, there isn't really a simple answer to this but basically it's because we can - we have the resources and it's a shame not to use them more fully. At the same time, we don't want to cause problems for people who earn their living from studio hire, so we're limiting it to just one month. January is a good month for us, after that we'll be getting a lot of new products that we're going to have to photography and make videos about.

And so many people struggle with inadequate space and inadequate gear, we feel that as we make our money from lighting, we should give something back.

Unbelievable offer, gratefully accepted. Garry was both patient and amazingly helpful. He did manage to let slip his real age though!!

I always admit to being 70 - except to women who aren't likely to be interested in anyone over 45 - and they don't believe me anyway:)
 
Some great shots there, and amazing offer, I'm not too far from you but transport-less so gutted.

All that you need to bring with you is a camera - come to that if you ask me nicely you can even use one of mine - so transport shouldn't really be an issue, even in Bradford we have buses and trains, or so I'm told:)

Strangely, although there has been a lot of interest in this, Shaheed is the first person to actually book. We're limiting this offer to January for various reasons, including the fact that we don't want to unfairly compete (and free is unfair competition) with hire studios, especially as many of them are our customers and we don't want to compete with our own customers.

It was brilliant. Garry was both amazingly helpful and patient!

This is an unbelievable offer and Garry (who has probably forgotten more About lighting than I'll ever know) is on hand with sage advice!!

I see that Shaheed has uploaded some more shots from this shoot to Instagram, including one that I particularly liked, with fairly lights combined with studio flash.

I wish I could take advantage of this really fantastic offer. I would love to pick Garry's mind as well, but 4+ hour drive seems a little too much at the moment.

I like that shot. The model was holding a pose, we turned the lights off to avoid any pollution from the ambient light and Shaheed set a shutter speed of 1 second for the fairy lights. Obviously all that had to keep still was the camera, and that was firmly fixed to a studio stand, it would have made no difference if the model had moved.
Shaheed asked her to move the fairy lights that she was holding, and you can see this movement in the ones that extend beyond her hand.

Any tips on that as I was struggling to get the balance right to get some shots of my wife and baby in front of the Christmas tree. I started with getting an ambient exposure so the Christmas tree lights were visible and then using flash to light the 'models'. I think I got okay results but I was at quiet high ISO to get the lights looking good. Don't mean to derail this thread though so if need be can start a separate one and post the results of my efforts in a suitable section to get advice.
