could someone please tell me what the best free photo editing software is. i just need something to use untill i can get hold of photshop cs4. also is there a free hdr generating software available to download?

Gimp is free, I also dowloaded a copy of Paint Shop Pro X, but can't recall how!
 
Picasa also has basic editing
Don't expect much for free though.

im not expecting much, i just want something i can play around with until i can get my hands on CS4
 
Why are you going for CS4? - Elements is a very good program, and much much cheaper and it won't take as long to save up for :)
 
because im having it given to me for free as a favour from a friend, but i have to wait untill she is done with it.
 
I used gimp as it was meant to be similar to ps. I was hoping to convert to mac and didn't want to convert ps over. I've moved over to pse now and yes gimp and pse are comparible.
 
ah thanks for that. i didnt know you had to transfer licences. i just presumed that as long as its de-activated then i could install onto my pc
