Since we moved here we've had several letters from law firms telling us that we may be eligible for compensation as we had a high voltage cable crossing the bottom of our garden. I've always binned them. Then some time last year, I thought why the hell not? So I replied.

Had a phone call yesterday telling me that we were eligible for a payment of over £4500! The law firm takes 20% but that really is free money!

On the surmise that you didn't 'sign-up' to their service.......is there likely a way to make the claim though a truly free of charge route???

Edit
I found these two places worth a read...

Possibly here a good starting point to learn about it

We've had quite a few 'wayleave' claim letters over the years. I've always binned them because I don't want to take money out of systems we all pay into.

The wayleave over our house is £12 a year.

We just stick it in our "charity pot".

The in-laws were getting £12 per year at their old property for a telegraph pole on the edge of their land, and yes it did supply their property as well as others.

My neighbour gets £2 a year for something! IIRC I persuaded him to go for the lump sum. It's possible that the compensation depends on what the cable is. I think ours is 11,000 volts. Maybe a telephone line is cheaper...

I got the offer letter today and there's still some burocracy to go through before the cash arrives, which could take up to 12 months. I will (of course) be giving some of the cash to charity!

There's an unauthorised 11k line in your garden? You don't need a lawyer, you need insulated bolt cutters :)

Have you seen the price of copper?

There's another way of looking at this. At some stage in the past the electric company put up a high voltage cable across the bottom of our garden without asking permission from the (previous) landowner. No mention anywhere of even a token £2 a year payment for the privelege. They've got what's coming to them really.

I think that there's only one way of looking at anything involving the law and that's what the judiciary decide.

I always thought these emails were a scam, but your story makes me think. It's pretty funny, like you tried something new and it paid off. I recently started using this app and it's a fun little way to pass the time and relax. Anyway, back to your winnings, even after a 20% cut, that's still a huge amount for something you would ignore.
Thanks for sharing! That forum thread looks helpful. It might be worth contacting Citizens Advice, too, for a truly free claim route!
