Asking for a friend who’s just dipping his feet into photography , I suggested a old version elements , but wondered if there was anything free that# he can do basic editing on with a windows laptop

Does the camera he has not have a free editing application from the company?
He has a Nikon d50 which cost him £20 Russ ..trying to advance him quickly

I think Faststone would do him. Anything else, free or not is a bit of a minefield. Someone mentioned Raw Therapee, but to be honest I think that would have him tearing his hair out. I'm sure you could get it to do what you want, but it's a bit intimidating, and really, does he want that?

ACDSee Gemstone 12 was free, it is a full proper programme.
Don't know if it is still free.

Doesn’t windows come bundled with the Photos App. Probably plenty good enough to start with.
Get him used to shooting first. Concentrate on Framing, Composition, Subject matter and of course light. Let’s no intimidate him with full on editing suites.

I've been trying a few recently, Raw Therapee and Darktable are quite good raw editirs, but will also work with jpegs, both are very full featured, but I find the interface daunting.
Faststone is simple and easy.
Gimp is a good photoshop replacement, although it's closer to an old version, theres not much it cant do.
