Formatting CF Memory Cards

When i download a memory card i tick the box "delete images after transfer" button.

Is it okay to do this or should i be formatting the card in camera?

Dont tick the delete box until you have backed up your shots in at least 2 places,I then delete the images and follow that up with a format,I have cards that are 2 years old and I have never had any problems following that regime
