Formatting a disk to be aTimeMachine

Hi guys... having put my Time Machine disk in safe place that now eludes me,I am going to get a new drive - spent far too long hunting for it, driving me up the wall - with a larger capacity.

What is the best formatting for a Mac ?

Do you have a preferred brand?

I don't know if there are other formats that will work, but try MacOS Extended (Journalled)...

ISTR for a few years now APFS is required for any disk used for Time Machine (SSD or HDD) and it will be converted if it is not

APFS was what I used for my external HDD drive based on my research 2 years ago.

Yes, I believe this is the recommendation but you can use other formats for Time Machine. Caveat emptor...
