hi all so i'm doing photos for a charity football match at Pompey and need to get a long lens so i can cover as much of the pitch as i can. ive got a nikon d5200 and ive been looking at lens hire and came across this http://www.lenslocker.co.uk/lens-hire/lens-nikon-mount/sigma-apo-50-500mm-f4-6-3-ex-dg-hsm.html
it seemed good as it has a long zoom, but something tells me i might be wrong.
also does anyone have any tips for this sort of photography as im use to motorsports.
any help would be great fully received.

A 300mm f/4 you may want to look into hiring, a good sharp lens and letting in more light than the sigma, Should be cheap to rent and will offer very good IQ.

i do own a nikon 70-300mm VR f4.5-5.6 lens, would that be good? also would 300mm be good enough reach to get photos?

70-300mm will do you fine, The most common set up for sport togs is 70-200mm + 300mm f/2.8 or 400mm f/2.8 preferred for rugby. 70-300mm will do you well and possible better than the 50-500mm would have.

day or night game, if night then nothing other than an f/2.8 lens unless youre working under brilliant lights and have a D3S/D4/D4S/1DX

It's a day game, but what's D3S/D4/D4S/1DX ? I thought you'd need a 400mm at least to get most of the action?

why would it be a 400 for rugby and not football? 70-200 and 400 for football and rugby.. a 300 doesnt reac the other end of the pitch.. well ANY lens will reach but I think your 300 for football as longest lens is missleading..

if you can sit anywhere (it being a charity match) then a 300 will frame both goalmouths if you sit at around the half way line

only if your sat behing the goals.. which for normal game is where your forced to sit... at a charity game they will probably be a bit more free and easy... behind the goals you need a 400 to get the other end..

ahh thanks PaulButler that makes sense :) as for where im sitting i don't think i will be i shoud have full access to the whole area so i could pick where i want to be, i just thought if im near one end and something is happening the other end would i be able to get a photo, save me running up and down the side of the pitch. lol

I only said 'preferred' Never said it was not for football :)

No.. you said the common setup is 70-200 and 300...its still there for all to see...

I just got back from footy.. loads of photographers.. not a single 300 amongst them.. all 400... how are you tellng people the common setup is a 300 then ? hey its not a big thing.. its just a wrong thing :)

As you can see I put '300 or 400' I didn't just put 70-200mm and 300mm as you claimed I did, Just saying :)
