i have been using my nikon d5000 on single point foucus with a 70-200mm 2.8 nikon for footy but have found some times im not changing it fast enough like wise me not reacting fast enough .also i get to use a nikon d3 i have used this on single point and found it hard to but i found 3d tracking mode it looks good for the job what do you use for sport ?

I use 51 pt 3D tracking for almost everything - incl sport!
 
I find it too slow for wildlife stuff Andrew. I use single point for pretty much everything.
 
single point center movable to surrounding.
