Hi all

Have just taken a call from a distressed lady... She's running an event this weekend (both days) and has been let down by a photography firm.

Basically, it's a kids football tournament, with 120 teams taking part spread over the Saturday and Sunday. They're after at least 4 photographers and also require on-site printing, so probably another couple of people to run that too... Pay is on a commission basis only, to be agreed with the organiser. Parents will be in attendance, so they'll be the buyers.

I've said I'd think about it but realistically I have no experience of this kind of setup and don't have the print facilities.

She's calling me back about 5.30 tonight, so is there anyone interested in doing this? If so, please let me know and I'll give her your number...

It's located in Maidstone, Kent.

Yeah same here. Thinking about how many kids would be there, if there's 120 teams.... that's a lot of potential business, in the right hands.

yep!! we need someone with the print gear....HELLOOOOOO!!!! There must be someone :D

Having done several karate tournaments just for our own club, I feel reasonably confident in my ability to get the shots, its just the gear that's lacking **insert big sigh**

I'd be interested but am busy on Saturday (my final year Degree show) :(

I will have by next week (possibly the printer by tomorrow night :D), but I'm up north.

For those that are considering it the kit you need to sell well is alot of money, you need to do this regualrly to justify it. £10 is really the minimum you should be charging for a photo and 6"x9" costs little more to produce than a 7"x5", but looks impressive in a good card mount.

Basically you would need

1 Dye Sub Printer = £1000
2 viewing stations (basic laptop) - £150 S/H each
1 master station (upload, basic edit and print) - £500
1 software solution - the one I'm investigating is £80
1 3m x 3m marquee to ensure the kit says dry in wet conditions - £300

Plus if you don't have access to power you'll need a High Quality generator (so not to damage the kit) - £900

And that's before you factor in the material costs such as print media, mounts, plastic bags etc or include your camera kit (f2.8s are really helpful to ensure the focus is only on the subject).

If you think you want to try it I would reccomend you hire the printer for you first gig places like System Insight will rent a Mitsubishi 9550 Dye Sub for about £200 a week and they will deliver and collect if from you in a flight case for £30. They will also only charge you for the prints you actually make - £0.59 per 6"x9". I did my first event a few weekends back took about £500 over 2 days and only broke even after all event specific costs (I lost money if I consider all the various additional expenses like cash tin, business cards, UV money checker were thrown in to the equation). Plus I worked my ass off for the 2 days of the event as well as for the 2 weeks before, it is not easy money - trust me!!

I wouldnt mind coming along one of the days, but I have only ever done one small football tournament ( last week, actually) The photos were really only taken to send a couple to our press office, it would really mainly be a learning experience for me.
Don`t have any suitable portable printing equipment, but I do have a generator and marquee ( probably not waterproof though)
So, really, not that much help!! And, its past 5.30 pm too.
Allan

I'd be interested in the Sunday as I am working elsewhere on the saturday.

If you could agree with the lady running it to cover the costs of this and get perhaps a lower commission, or just take the risk yourself, you could rent the kit from System Insight

They have a very good reputation for this sort of stuff, but it is now running a bit late for this.

Yep, had a look at some of that stuff a few months ago and it is damned expensive to get started and like you say you need to be doing it regularly in order for it to 'earn its keep' :bonk:

Thanks for all the responses... especially the one listing the various kit and prices!

Needless to say, after all that, the 5.30 call never came. Hopefully she found someone who could meet all her requirements

No problem, I only know them because they are all on my shopping list.

Incidently, I found that Photomart also rent the Mitsubishi 9550 DyeSub for a week for £117.50 (about £80 cheaper than System Insight), however, unlike System Insight where you only pay for what you print and they give you loads of media with Photomart you have to guess how much you'll need as you have to buy the media; if you don't use it all you are left with it.

Typical Andy, Only just seen this or I would have been up for it to est out the new 40d and lens.

9x6 we sell for 6 pounds for one 10 for 2 or 15 for 4, and we charge the same amount for keyrings and fridgemagnets which are tiny
