Football top leagues - void, award or delay?

With it becoming increasingly unlikely that top leagues will be able to complete the remaining fixtures in the near future what is the fairest way to proceed. The Dutch have just announced their league as void which seems to be the correct decision given Ajax and AZ are tied on points. What about teams like Liverpool, Celtic and PSG who all but won their leagues. Should UEFA develop a formula to award where a team is well in front?

Opinions will very much depend on which team you support. Liverpool have been trying, without success, to win the Premier League for almost 30 years and have come very close on a couple of occasions. Being so far ahead of everyone else this season and pretty much nailed on for the title since a few months back, it'll be an extremely bitter pill to swallow if the season ends up void. Celtic on the other hand wouldn't be as gutted I don't think.

Another option being put forward is to end the season on a points per game basis. Of course, this then brings in controversy as far as promotion/relegation is concerned. There's usually a team that puts a late run together to escape the drop. Aston Villa for example, have a game in hand and are 2 points off safety. Under a points per game system, they would still go down.

Of course, there's still an outside chance that. games will be played behnid closed doors in June so the above options may be moot.

I heard on the news this morning there was discussion about football matches being played behind closed doors.

How is that going to be safe. some of those involved can maintain social distancing but not exactly easy to do for the players.

Dave

Just play behind closed doors. You can isolate the players for example for 14 days previous and test them - live on TV too, Germany are planning to kick off again in a few weeks. We do not have to put everything on hold for the next year!

Well that means no sporting events or music or anything for 18 months or so until we get a vaccine! No thanks!

I don't know if it would have to be 18 months but yes it could mean no large events for a long time.

Events behind closed doors might just be possible if all those involved were tested and found to be clear before the event, but that has problems which would be difficult to get over - how quickly the tests could be done and the results received, and how can tests of those involved in sporting events be justified when there are still key workers who haven't been tested?

The tests seem to be there, people just are not taking them for whatever reason.

If that's what it takes, then so be it.

Life cannot be on hold for 18 months, it will cause no end of misery, economic pain, mental health issues and long term reduced life expectancy.

Other countries appear to (and will) be doing some things soon and we should be too.

Tests seem to be available only to key workers and their families if they think they might be infected. Still not sure how accurate the tests are, both for the virus and antibodies.

If lockdown in one form or another needs to continue for a while, life will have to be kept on hold. It's either that or drop it completely and let those who will die just die. Personally, I'll sit it out.

Play behind closed doors WHEN IT'S SAFE TO DO SO

Thats my preference as I need to work as a sports photogrpaher:)

But.. The club I cover and many more in leagues 1 and 2 probably some in championship who are already losing money will then have to pay out a lot more with hardly any income and therefore lose even more money... TV or iplayer simply wont cover the cost of putting a match on... A lot of clubs just can't do this unless the league bail them out...

Personally I can't see us going back to sports with large crowds this side of christmas so how do you start next season let alone this one?

They're not available for general use yet though.
The company that I work for have 6000 on order, and a lot of us are classed as key workers, and they can't get them yet.
I don't think it will be too long before they get them.
My wife works for the NHS in a hospital on the admin side, and will only be tested if she shows symptoms.

I'm sure we will too once we're over the worst, but no other country has started sporting events and concerts yet.

Coronavirus: Premier League football could return 'within weeks' with matches behind closed doors http://news.sky.com/story/coronavir...eks-with-matches-behind-closed-doors-11978631

This might solve the issue in England.

Missleading headlines IMHO ..It won thappen before the end of May.. you can count on that... IMHO :) and unless restrictions are lifted not even then... AFAIK according to the news.. they will look at it again on 7th May

Can't see why other sports can't come back.. Like Golf? Snooker? anyhting where the players are seperated?

Hoping that golf will be allowed soon - it's my main exercise! Before lockdown, we were restricted to playing as 2s rather than 3s or 4s and the cups were inverted so the ball didn't fall to the bottom of the hole. Anything within a putter's length was a "gimme" and so the flags (in theory) didn't need touching. I'd even be happy to play a "Billy" (No Mates) round if it meant I could get out there. Most galling thing has been the almost perfect goofing weather.

Golf certainly sounds like it should be one of the first sports to be allowed. Snooker you could argue about touching the cloth or tennis touching tennis balls between two players. Unfortunately the more players per sports match probably increases the risk, so football will likely be well down on the list to return.

Just cancel the season, leave everybody in the divisions they are, those that qualified for Europe this year just stay in same position for next year. When there are so many lives being lost why is there that much talk about football. It really doesn't matter.

apparently if it doesnt matter to you then it doesnt matter to everyone? Its my livelyhood.. its how i make a living , pay the bills and put food on the table... ok lives being lost is the most important

but seriously.. what a completely brain dead comment to come charging in with :(

I don't care what you talk about on here as that wasn't what I was talking about. I was on about how often its on the news and the discussions about whether its fair that players on £150,000+ have to take a pay cut or whether their billionaire owners should furlough their staff when clubs further down the leagues are really struggling. I didn't come charging in anywhere, I entered the discussion and gave my thoughts. Could you please explain what is dead brained about that. Perhaps its only your opinion and your profession that matters, sorry, I must have missed that in terms and conditions.

or maybe your a Liverpool supporter...

I have a solution that can resolve everything.

You will get a result of all your matches.
You can do all remaining matches in a weekend, a week at most.
You can adhere to social distancing rules.

Penalty shootout.

You just have to get everyone sign up on it, otherwise, Liverpool will never be "true" Champions, Everton and Man U/ Man City fans will forever say they never mathematically won it even though I think most people accept they will never be caught.
