i have just brought the football league newspaper,

i never knew it was out,
but i know the non league paper pays 50 pounds a photo ( i think )
but how much does the football league paper pay,

iron

Owned by same company but you must have dataco licence to access games as (for some reason) they cannot.

to photograph in the football league you need to have 10 paid photos in the papers like the non league paper,

how do you get a game with the non league paper,
i have sent in photos to them and they have said they really like them,
but still no game

i think you will find its 15 pix obtained under you own football conference licence if doing BSP or lower league stuff in local paper. read dataco notes on there web site

that is true marlin,
but many local papers don't pay

It is possible to get your own licence, you just need to work hard enough, as Tony and others have. I don't want to sound rude but do you really need a football league licence? For the sake of getting £80 a week from the league paper, is it really worth all that time?

kieran i have conference licence,
but i just can't get a game,
the non league paper have said my photos are good enough but don't know how to earn money from it

i wasn't in anyway questioning whether or your photographs are good enough, just whether or not there is any point in you having a licence. You've answered the question though by saying you have no-one to buy your photographs. Have you tried approaching the away teams local newspapers on the games you are photographing? What have the non league paper said when you've approached them.

I don't really get why you'd want a licence or deserve a licence until your business was at a point where there was a demand for images

i have sent photos to the non league paper they have said that they are good enough for them and to phone them every week but there are so many photography's trying to earn money from it that maybe they use certain photographer's

They probably have a load of people ringing each week, the regulars will get the most work then scraps to all the others. Like I said, why not try the more local newspapers or the local newspapers for the away teams?

i get my photo's in the herne bay gazzete every week but they say they can not afford to pay me for my work,

sorry to sound negative we all have to start some where with that i agree and i will try help most people but as i have said more than once do not give people your stuff away just for the buzz of seeing it in print and as james says look round for other openings
from where i sit one of your main problems is location
why not pick a eastbourne game with a team say eg gateshead ring the local paper in the north east tell them you covering the game and ask would they be interested
but when they say we dont have a budget dont say well you can have them for nowt

i understand,
i will stop sending in photo's for free,
they sometimes bring there own photographer to home games but never for away games,
i understand what you mean,
if they can get something for free they will,
and like me i send them in for free they are laughing,

so what would i ask for a photo of a non league game to a paper,
i think the non league paper pay's 50 pounds i think so would i ask for that for my photo's to a local paper or cheaper,

marlin you did not sound negative,
i just need to learn,
i have learnt the hard way really where i am giving my work away for free,

Just a point to anyone thinking about this (yes its 15 pics for lge and 30 for prem) BUT and heres a the big but... pictures in the NLP or League paper dont count towards your licence... unless anythings changed so as always best to double check.. but AFAIK they dont...

I know somoene who applied and all his NLP and lge paper pics where knocked back..

Would it be true to say that this is a bit of a catch 22 situation..?

iron - have you called the sports editor at the herne bay gazette and spoken to them? The guys on here advised me to do that with the local papers. I speak to the local sports ed quite often now and he knows where I will be covering, makes sure they don't send their staffers and I get published and paid.

Its easier for them to tell you they can't afford to pay via email than if you call them up and speak. If they still say they can't pay you can still offer your services for anything they need covering if they are stuck, etc.

Our local papers actually told me over the phone first, so none of my earlier 'local' non-league stuff saw print, which is a shame, but it is worth a try certainly!

that's what the herne bay gazzete told me,
we have no money,
and even if i don't send in a photo,
they just don't have a photo in there paper,

people want to see photo's,
but paper's are to tight with there money

ya cant make em pay thats for sure.. a local paper wanted a pic off me.. it was a news story and i was the only one wiht the pic.. its a small once a week paper in a small town... so i said they could have it for a nominal fee of 10 quid.. they said they cant pay.. so i said they cant have... so they sent a staff photogrpaher to the persons house who was in the story and got a setup shot...... eh? ...

to me i really don't understand them,
if they sent a photographer from herne bay to sevenoakes,
they will have to pay for the petrol for there photographer,
wages,

so even if the photographer was only getting 6 pounds an hour,
thats 12 pounds for the game,
plus petrol so maybe 25-30 pounds,
i don't know if the photographer would get paid for the 2 hours to get to the game and get home,
so could end up costing the newspaper 50 pounds,
but like you said kipax they will not even give you 10 pounds,
i really don't understand them

i have just spoken to the sports editor for a local paper that i was going to cover a game and he said they do not have a budget for a freelance photographer no more,
so they get no photo's in there newspaper

any teams in your surrounding area that would be covered by other local papers? what about other sports?

every paper i have phoned so far have said they can not pay for photo's at the moment

agree but the wage does not come into it, if he is a staffer got to pay him any way but thats how it is now. there is a large south yorkshire paper that do not have a freelance budget so its not just your area.

i understand,
so its so hard then for sports photographer's to sell there work

Maybe the photographer they sent did it for free ? there's enough photographers happy to work for free !

I got a missed call from the derby telegraph on friday asking if i could send them some pics from a match they knew i was covering for local papers (local papers passed on my info)

So I returned the call and spoke to someone else on picdesk.. asked if still req.. (yes).. asked how many pics (10 to 20) asked for deadline (that evening no time) agreed on everyhting and then I asked what the fee was... she said (not much).. so i said go on...she said (well usually nothing) and then asked what i normally charge....when i told her she said she will (pass it on) but they have a guy who usually photogrpahs **** team and he does it for free... so I left it wiht her to get someone to call me back but told her it would only be if they could pay..

If the guy doing it for free is getting his foot in the door and gets them to pay (that can work it did for me and got me other work) then good luck to him and i hope he does well.. but if he is always going to give for free then aaaargh :(

kipax,

i know people who charge lots of money for doing weddings'
but i also know people that do wedding's for free,
same thing with football games,
so many people giving photo's away for free how can photographer's earn money from it,
makes it so hard
