I was just thinking how much my thought process and self critique has progressed in a positive direction since being a member of this particular forum.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm still a long way off and slowly trudging and ploddin away!

Putting your best (or your worst) for all to view can be daunting as we are faced with many different truths, perspectives and preferences from others, not just with our images but with our opinions, methods and beliefs.

I know I have improved thanks to all the folk who have taken the time to comment/advise/shred/mickey take on the posts I have made.

I have become a little wiser (not too much:D), I have become more aware and I appreciate being able to read the varying opinions, methods and advice offered here, I realise I'm not alone in my thoughts and findings, others have made the same mistakes and learned from them as I have and thanks to TP, I find myself reading less crap these days!

so now:

How about you?

What have you learned?

How have you improved?

What makes you keep coming back?

Oh wow Tomas, what a cracking question!

I guess I keep coming back because I keep learning (and laughing :))

What have I learned? Oh good grief!!! I could not even begin to list what I have learned from TP. There really is too much to list.

How have I improved? Well TP has given me a lot more confidence to try things outside my comfort zone. I used to take landscapes and pets, now I will have a bash at just about anything with the attitude that it doesn't matter what I get wrong so long as I'm learning. I guess I learned to make a fool of myself! lol.

Inspiration is the thing I get most. And I've stopped buying awful amateur mags that constantly repeat articles with less useful information that you can find here :)

Brilliant Ali! There's lots of points you've made that I forgot to mention! Like having a good laugh, there's some comedians in the making on here who have me in fits regulary!

I think it's great that you have ceased buying mags too, as there is a wealth of info posted on here everyday, that IMO is way more critically informative and educational!

I've learned that these far more detailed and important layers within the all techniques that make up the full 'art of photography' than I ever thought possible ... and that knowledge continues to grow daily.. well hopefully.

I have improved I feel, I learned to build on my strengths and improve my weaknesses and that's only been possible by understanding everyone's opinions on shots they've shown, or I've shown, the gathering of so many similar minded critiques ultimately leads to a clear and true idea of success or failure of each image, just looking through threads each day at new ideas and shots gleams a little more insight than the day before .

I keep coming back because I Like many of the people, there talents, temperament and politeness .. and that's also one of the reasons I joined in the first place.

I've learned that if you visit the for sale section, it cost's you money...lol

I learned a lot from the TP shoot in Blackpool, 90 % of my shooting is AP mode, and on the shoot on an overcast day I should have used SP.

Didn't see till I got home and found loads of shots blured...Doh!

i've learnt that you need money, patience and also some luck.

I am not sure how much better a tog I am but, just as important, I have gained a lot of confidence from my time here and my thanks goes out to the forum for helping me gain that confidence:thumbs:

Though I hardly speak to him I think that Marcel is a top bloke, a great dad (of which I am envious) and that if everyone was like him then the world would be a better place.

Simple as that.

I have really enjoyed being part of this forum, the the people really make it a friendly place to be. There is also alot of inspiring pictures which gives you the drive to have a go yourself.

The most inportant learning aspect to me is the positive criticism, it really helps towards becoming a better photographer. 'Alot of people would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism', but if you take the good from it, you will realise people are doing you a favour and being helpful:):)

Sir, that is bloody decent of you to say so. Thanks very much  :'(

I disagree, you haven't wiped my arse for over 3 days...

I've learnt too much to list. And find that by commenting on others shots as best as I can that I learn a whole load more. But I also know I have so much more to learn.

To keep out of the For Sale section.

How to do contrast masking, and that I need to concentrate more when I take shots and I think I am doing that now which is good.

Interesting! what should happen if one gives Marcel jaffa cakes?

Thats easy to answer.

I take crap photos, and everyone else takes good photos:bang:

I don't know, depends on the sincerity I'd suggest... :D ... careful, any mistake may lead to a rather unfaltering heading replacing your forum status.. ;)

Blimey charlie! I don't fancy the status of 'The Jaffa Cake Bribist' anytime soon!

P.S, they have many different flavours of Jaffa Cake over here Marcel, Raspberry, Strawberry, Artic Cloud Berry.....hmmmmmmmm!

I've just had a PM of Marcel telling me hes watching my waffle and now I owe him a packet of Jaffa Cakes ...

Hurry up and send him some will ya...:thumbs:

I'd happily donate alternative flavour jaffa cakes. Address?

What have I learned? Loads!!! But I am reminded every day that I have very little, if any, talent :p

I've learnt many things, some of them useful, some of them amusing, some of them downright worrying. But most importantly for me I've learnt about time. If I'm taking wildlife or sports I need to be quicker and when taking landscapes or portraits I can take the time to set up properly and not rush into it and then rush off to the next location/person.
And its been loadsa fun.

Andy

Twice I've had software problems solved that would otherwise have completely stumped me , and had me tearing my hair out.

It's been good to feel part of a community of photographers instead of feeling completely out on a limb ....

PS not sure about the jaffa cakes. Maybe I'm on the fringes of the community ....

It's OK. I'm eating healthily now, so Jaffa Cakes are off the menu.

Send me carrot sticks instead! :D

It has taught me not to be frightened of my camera and to experiment with my pictures outside of the safety of Auto-mode. My only problem is remembering what I have learnt (its an age thing :)) I enjoy looking at the marvelous pictures posted and to get inspiration for my next 'shot'. I am never bored, in fact I never have enough time (work can be a bane sometimes :)) to catch up on all the new posts.

Most of all it is just fun and relaxing in the company of some very nice people...long may it continue

I suppose I've learned a lot about digital photography that my BA degree never tought me back in the day when it was all film-based. There are certainly a lot of knowledgeable peeps on here (plus a few know-it-alls!!) and it goes to show tha despite you thinking you know a lot, there's always something new to learn.

Have I improved? I'm not sure - I've certainly got my verve for general reportage back but I'm still int hat 'no-man's land' of not being totoally sure of what i want to shoot. I think I'm always improving but like many folk I talk to, I have those days when I have a mental block - photographer's block if you will - that put me back a little bit. I suppose this just helps me strive for perfection.

What makes me come back to TP? I like the banter, the chance to pass on knowledge and pick some up too, plus it keeps me off the streets!! :)

How different eyes see different positives and negatives in an image, the wealth of knowledge and advice freely offered. The fact that many of the foto sites have been visited/seen by other forum members makes their comments invaluable.

Another note, being honest, I get the impression that I am not that liked on here as I try to convey honesty in my posts, which can be ambiguous due to text. Hope not, I am a decent chap.

I have learned that L series glass is the answer to all my prayers.

And that with the help of you lot, my photography will get better.

And I have learned that I have so much more to learn, as I have no idea what I'm doing.

Excellent questions!

What have you learned?

Lots, and lots and lots, but ignoring some of the tips, tricks and other useful info, one thing sticks in my head more than anything. I have learned, that photography is more than taking photos. It's more than clicking a little black button and seeing the results on screen or in print. Its more than someones job, or the weekend hobby which helps you relax. I have learned, Photography is a certain mindset, a way of life if you will. It grabs you, and once it has a hold, nothing ever seems the same again. You walk the streets, and instead of looking at the lovely items in the displays, you are framing anything and everything in your head, working out depth of field and shutter speed without realising it. You are scanning every tiny bit of your vision for that next shot, and you can't wait to take it...then the great bit? Sharing them with your friends, your family of fellow photographers, and I have to say, its absolutely awesome that this place exicsts. Not only do you get to share what you love doing, day in and day out, but you also get to experience the whole thing again via the eyes of your peers. You see what they saw, you get a look into their vision, you take inspiration, and you learn. The whole process is a wierd type of fine tuning and before long, I really think the results start to pay off.

I'm going to stop rambling, or i'll get sore fingers. Long and short, this place is awesome, and I have learned loads, and hope to learn loads more.
