Do they function as normal beauty dishes? Reason for asking is potential storage space limitations etc.

TIA :)

The Lencarta ones do, because their 16 rib design means that they are very nearly round. And their design is also very close to being parabolic.

But the more usual 8-rib design ones fall far short.

Splendid, thanks Garry. It was the Lencarta ones I was looking at as it happens, now to decide what size - guessing bigger is best?

If you want to light just the face (traditional BD usage) then smaller offers better control, so is better.
But they all come with diffusers, which convert them to a softbox of the same size, so bigger ones are more popular.

I have a 120 folding dish. After researching I decided this would be fit my needs. As a beauty dish it is very sufficient, due to the 18 rods, as mentioned above, that make it circular. And the defining point that confirmed my decision was the fact of it doubling as a large octabox.

My only gripe is that it is very large, and I feel I may need a small dish if I want to isolate light on the face only.
