I hope someone can throw some light on this for me. I'm running windows 7: 64 bit.. now I have a folder of photos that when I try to open them I'm being told that I don't have permission to look at them never mind edit... FGS :bang:

how can I overcome this.. I have done a search on the wider web but honestly some of the solutions appear far beyond my very limited pc experience ..so if anyone can help in very simple, very layman terms (if possible,,I realise this isn't always so) I would be very grateful

This is a quirk that windows added. If they are in your my pictures folder, get to them by clicking libraries, then pictures. Its different to XP.
If that doesn't work and your account is an admin account, you can right click the folder choose properties- security - advanced - owner and take ownership, remember to click apply to sub folders as well.
(that's off the top my head, it may be slightly different, but im on my phone). Then apply and you should have access.

Let me know if you still have problems and I'll get my laptop out

hi apologies for not replying sooner but things got in the way

Its located on an external hard drive in a "My Pictures" library

however whatever I do I am unable to take control as the error message "access denied" keeps coming up.. I assume its a folder that the security permissions were initially set in XP but if this is a reason I cant understand why I can access other folders that I have migrated across to Windows7 quite easily..

I've had a good trawl through the advice available and none of the solutions available seem to work so basically im now almost reconciled to the idea that they are locked away for keeps

regards and thanks for the replies

that might make sense then, if there was a specific permission set in XP on that folder then 7 wont know anything about it.

just right click and go into properties and then security, find the take ownership settings and do it for all subfolders.

Thank you Neil for your time.. I have tried that but whatever I seem to do with permissions security etc it stays firmly inaccessible

I guess will just have to move on and take more photos to replace them

Anyhow thanks again

Is there an error message?
Did you save the photos there yourself or was it via a backup program or another programme that saved them there?
Can you post a screen shot so we can see what you are looking at?

If all else fails (& providing this isn't an encrypted folder) I'm sure you would be able to recover the pics one way or another so don't give up hope!

Friend had the exact same problem the other day, it turned out that he was running webroot which blocks permissions on certain folders etc until you turn webroot off temporarily and the access is then permitted!
