So I bought my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 about a year ago now, ran it for a while on my D200 but when blowing stuff up for use as DPS in magazines, the focus was always off. Hunted around on't 'net and found a lot of info about back/front focussing issues with this lens so sent it to Sigma who, after a million years (about eight weeks actually), returned it saying it had been re-calibrated under warranty. Sorted.
Well, not exactly.
I haven't used it in anger since I had it back from Sigma so went out on a shoot today in Bedfordshire and saw the perfect opportunity. Took a rake of shots, checked them back in the LCD and would you believe it, things are out of focus. I was taking shots of a guy about 50-60 metres away, using the centre and far left focus selectors on the D200 and none of the shots had the focus point where I set it - every one was focussed about two metres behind the subject.
Now, I managed to get a few shots done using manual focus but it's a pain, means I miss action, and because I'm shooting handheld I'm always having to re-focus. Still, AF is there for a reason (otherwise I'd still be using an FM2) and I expect it to work. I'm loathe to send the lens back to Sigma simply because I could be waiting ages like last time only to find out that a re-calibration does jack.
Plus, now I'm thinking it's the D200. I remember when the first set of issues with the lens arose I took it into the local Jessops and they allowed me to test it on a D300. Images looked better than from my kit, but I just put it down to the better sensor etc...
Has anyone heard of or had experience of problems with their Nikon not focussing correctly and if so, what did they do about it? Mine's out of warranty now by the way.
