As always I'm having trouble focusing on my wife's minimalist paintings (there's virtually no details). What would be recommended as a target for focusing? Something that I can lay on the surface of the painting to focus upon?

A friend of mine, who worked as a fine art photographer up to the 1980s, had very poor vision. He took an old folding chess board with him as a focussing aid. It certainly worked for him.

As above you don’t need anything that has its own pattern, so long as it’s a contrast to the painting, a simple strip of black ribbon, and a white one for dark paintings.

the edge between the ribbon and canvas is enough to focus on. Simple effective, takes up no space.

I see from the image you've posted that you have answered you own question. No need to over think on this one.
