Until a few days ago I was unaware of this issue with washing machines. Hope my experience might help others.

Our washing machine is less than a couple of years old and has never given any trouble. Last week I put some washing on but noticed during the cycle the drum was completely full of foam.

I wasn’t too concerned but when I looked a while later the cycle had stopped and the display showed an error code for too much detergent. I turned the machine off, left it for about half an hour and the foam had largely disappeared.

I thought turning the machine on again would complete the cycle but it showed the same error code.

Further research found that the same error code could also indicate a water leak. I was a bit miffed that the same error code could be for a minor problem or something more serious.

We were going to get someone to look at it but thought, given the error code could indicate too much detergent(which we had seen) it would odd if the cause was a water leak which just happened to occur at the same time.

More reading revealed there is a float switch at the bottom of the machine which immobilises the machine if water collects in the bottom, which it would do if there was a water leak. We wondered if as the foam broke down it could create enough water to drip down the inside of the machine and trip the float switch which would make the same error code for two different events more understandable.

Even more reading suggested lifting the front of the machine could drain any water that had collected in the bottom.

We did that and when we tried the machine again everything was back to normal.

We did not notice any water behind the machine but it is a very tight space so a small amount of water would be difficult to see.

We were lucky and have to thank various internet pages as had we got someone to look at it we could have been billed for unnecessary work.
