Hi all,

Well, here goes nothing... My attempt at a 52 :) I can't promise they'll be any good, but it can't hurt to try!

Week 1: Sin

Week 01 - Sin by Flying Penguin, on Flickr

I had gone down to Soho, figuring it couldn't be hard to find something on theme, but it turns out that bouncers don't like a dodgy looking bloke in a suit photographing strip joints! :naughty:

I had to beat a hasty retreat and fell back to Chinatown, and even there I got more than a few raised eyebrows.....

If nothing else, you've got to have balls of steel to take this sort of picture in public :D

Cheers,

Jamie

like this very much.. has a real seedy feel to it, like your composition.. well done on having the nerve to get out around there with the camera.. great start

I LOVE the left hand side, the note and the door tell a good story, but what on earth is the big white bit?

Thanks :)

The door is actually open and the staircase is the right hand edge of the picture so the white bit is the hallway wall... Perhaps I should have left a bit more detail in the staircase to make it clearer. It's odd, I can see some step detail in PS, but on the same screen it doesn't show on the Flickr photo....

Turns out it's my JPG conversion rather than Flickr, I've re-exported and replaced the version on Flickr.

Self inflicted as always :)

Good start - looks a difficult shot to expose for - but you've kept the highlights and still retained some shadow detail.

I might like to see a bit more of the staircase, as for me thats as much part of the shot as the doorway... but the hint of it is there curving round back into the frame, so still works well as it is.

also - your pics gone from the main thread presumably since you've reloaded your flickr!

Thanks for the feedback :)

Christine - Model in this case is a euphamism. These aren't convenience notes made by some starving artist, this is an advert of services available.... :)

Yes you have more 'guts' than me Jamie. Gives me the idea of seedy goings on upstairs in keeping with the theme. Well done.

Hi, Jamie, this one has a real gritty feel to it, which I like. It says Sin to me, or hints at Sin :naughty:

Not keen on the large white wall, but I guess it was there. Pity you could get more of an angle to view mor of the stairs.

Good start

Cheers.

hi Jamie & a belated welcome from me

different take on the theme but it works....agree with comments on the white wall but yeah , I like it

Well, here's my (slightly late) take on "Season".

Bit of a tricky one for me this week, having been confined to an office in very central London in daylight hours, so I thought I'd try something new (for me).

Not 100% happy with it, but it'll have to do :)

Cheers,

Jamie

Could have been better if there was more detail in the tree, but the bare tree is very symbolic of this time of the year. Good idea with a decent execution :)

I was struggling wiith that for a while... I did have a wider crop which I though had more detail, but felt a little more unfocused with the leading line of the trunk being a little obscured. My ideal would have been a more densely branched tree but I couldn't find one! :)

Thoughts?

I quite like the first one for some reason. Works as a kind of abstract.

The wider one is just a bit too much "yup, silhouette of a tree"

Thanks, that's the conclusion I came to when selecting the first one, glad it's not just me :)

Yeah, on theme and minimal. Good detail in the branches.

It's a tad gray for me.

Cheers.

Fair comment :)

I've had a play around and actually, I think I prefer the whiter version, it seems more clearly an abstract, rather than just horrifically underexposed ;) Also a bit less depressing...

the white version for me too sorry seem to have missed your first post too its very dirty looking in a good way

Good start to your 52 Jamie

I like the gritty feel to sin, the processing works well with the subject, amybe just a little crop on the rhs so as the white wall isn't so dominating in the frame. Other than that spot on for me

Your edited version of season is spot on too. I particularly like the abstract feel to it. Good work all round  Iain

Well, given I was late for Season, I might as well be early for Gravity :)

In the spirit of trying new things, I decided to find out what the mode on the flash labeled "RPT" could do. Add in a Leeds United snowman, and away we go :D

Thoughts, both good and bad, welcome :)

Hi, Jamie, he's a happy little thing. Nice black BG and WB looks spot on. I like the decapitated arm and the slight movement works for me.

Pity top tow are over lapping. Also, perhaps spinning the thing so it's falling at different angles would add a bit more dynamism.

Cheers.

Agree with this :)

like the silhouette tree with the white background.. makes a great abstract image..

he looks happy even though he's being dropped from a great height ;) good background, nice light on the snowmen

Like it apart from the hand - great sharpness on the falling snowmen, I could like with a bit of blur on the hand - but the two thumbs and double ring on the finger is a little too much!

Overall I think it's good, the white against the black bacground works really well.

Hi Jamie

edited version of Season for me...whiter BG sets it off a treat & really makes it work as an abstract...well thought of :)

Gravity .....cracking focus on the snowmen...agree with Andy's comments on the overlap but still a good shot mister

I really like the simpleness of this. spot on lighting and focus and I am SO jealous of that rpt flash thing (what make is it?) You have used it to good effect here to show the acceleration of an object under gravity.

:lol:Leeds United though? - really?:gag: - oh well suit yourself:lol:

There is something about that hand though I can't think what. I think the composition wouldn't be as good without it but at the same time it looks out of place? maybe it's a body language thing, perhaps it needs to practice it's poses?

Thanks all, food for thought :) Not going to have time to do a re-shoot, but it's one technique I might return to later to see what I can improve.

In my defence, the LUFC teddy (well, a pair of them actually) was a present from my father to my twin boys, on the basis that indoctrination is best started early. Unfortunately it's 36 months plus and they are just over 2.5 months old, so I thought I might as well get some use out of it, even if they don't! :) And he is such a happy little fellow....

Indoctrination Starts Early by Flying Penguin, on Flickr

Brian - RPT is just the symbol used for repeating mode on Nikon flash guns (SB-800 in my case), never had cause to use it before as I'd never thought about what I could do with it

Thanks, I only have generic cheapo strobes, I will have to look out for one like yours.

Love the pic of the twins - lets hope one of the 52 themes is "twos"!
