Hi all

I am spending 2 weeks hoilday in Florida Keys from next Saturday (20th Oct)

Travelling around a bit within the Keys and plan to visit the Everglades too and looking for recommendations for good photography locations

I am most keen to see the birds and other wildlife in natural surroundings, but also any must see landscapes and general locations

Hiring a car and willing to travel for the right place

So far on my wish list:

Anhinga Trail
Shark Valley
Wakodahatchee
Green Cay wetlands
Viera Wetlands

These are all in the Everglades, so want to have some options in the Keys too and probably narrow down the Everglades list to the best of the bunch

If any of you have been to this area can you let me know your views on the above choices and also let me know of any other choices in the area, particularly the Keys

Really keen to seen the spoonbills, Ospreys and 'gators

Many thanks in advance

James

Amazing, we shall be in the Keys at the same time, well from the 25th to be exact.
We're staying put though, got a house rental near Marathon.
Here's a link to a question I posted on POTN, may help you:

What gear are you taking?

Small world!

Thanks for the link - some good ideas there

I am not travelling light!!!

Canon 7D
Canon 100-400L
Kenko PRO 300 1.4X DGX (arrived today!)
Canon 100mm f2.8L Macro
Canon 85mm f1.8
Canon 17-55mm f2.8
Sigma 8-16mm
Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT
in a Lowepro flipside 500AW backpack
Giottos MTL8361B with Vanguard SBH-300 Ball Head

.............and an NHS defibrillator;)

Don't plan to take it all out each day

Will be travelling with my wife and 10 year old son and my 20 year daughter may join us for one of the weeks, but they will be more interested in the beach and towns, so some or all of the wildlife shooting would be just me

Maybe you could PM me when you get to Marathon and see if we could meet up for a shoot?

Great idea about meeting.
Which airline are you flying? I chose BA because of the excellent weight limit on cabin luggage.
I'll probably take my 1D and 7D, 500mm F4 and a 300mm F4. If there's room I may take more:D.
I'm undecided whether to pack my CF tripod with the Wimberley gimbal or just take a monopod, got to leave room for snorkelling gear and just maybe some clothes:lol:
I'll also pack my Fuji x100 for some candids or landscapes.

Flying with American Airlines - not sure about the weight limit on hand luggage, but intend to distribute the heavy stuff between me, my wife and son and put the tripod in the hold plus some lenses in my jacket pockets to be on the safe side :D

If you can manage it, have a day/night in Miami.

Its not for everyone but the Art Deco buildings (specifically on Ocean Drive) are amazing at night. The colours are so vibrant.

And in the day you can always take a stroll on South Beach and people watch!

Thanks Andrew

Still haven't book all the accommodation but have booked the first 3 nights in Fort Lauderdale, just outside Miami so no problems getting there for an evening and if my daughter joins us there is no way we won't be hitting the city!

I am a big fan of Art Deco so good call there

T-7 and counting so please keep the ideas coming

Just about to book 3 days in one of the Art Deco hotels!!!!

Leaving tomorrow night and getting rather excited!!!

Highway 41, Tamiami Trail from Mimai to Naples is great for seeing Gators in the wild

Mr Bennett - which hotel are you staying at? We stayed at the Park Central on Ocean Drive a couple of years ago.

Only had 4nts but had an amazing time - Miami is a fantastic place.

You're going to love it!
