Planning to take my camera to a floodlit rugby match tomorrow night. I'm sure venues vary, but generally speaking am I likely to get reasonable shots if I set my max ISO to 800 and use shutter priority? I'm hoping I can use 1/500th at least... Also, any recommendations for white balance? Much obliged!

Diego is the man for this but my guess would be to set the camera to aperture priority at the largest aperture, that way you will always get the fastest shutter speed for correct exposure. You might find by setting the shutter speed to something like 1/500 that even the widest aperture won't give you enough exposure if the light is that bad. Will you be using a 2.8 lens?

Venues differ massively, I have given up on taking shots at my local football club for the evening games, just can't get the shutter spped fast enough. 1/500th is no where near fast enough.

Depends on how bright the floodlights are. You will certainly require an f2.8 lens to get speeds like 1/500th!

I would still say shutter priority myself even if you had to crank up the iso a bit more. You are still going to need a fast lens though to get 500th.

I could be out of luck then as I'll be using a Nikkor 18-200 which offers a measly 5.6. Ah well... thanks anyway.
