My local team have a home game tonight, and I was thinking of going along and taking a few shots.

As I have never shot a match before, let alone under floodlights, is there any quick tips on settings etc to get me started.

My main interest is in birds, so would my Sigma 150-500 be suitable?

Thanks

I hate to be negative, but no I'm afraid your 150-500 will not be suitable. It just isn't fast enough, even under the best floodlights f2.8 is a must, without it you simply can't get a good enough shutter speeds to get anything other than a blurry mess.

No problem Steve! What about pushing the iso up? I use 1600 at the moment with acceptable results.
The only f2.8 lens I have is the Canon 100mm L macro, which would give around 160mm on my 60D. Would this be enough focal length, as you can stand quite close.

Agree with Steve I am afraid

You may need ISO above 4000 if its even a local team as floodlights wont be the best, even at ISO4000 you will need 2.8 unfortunately

I will forget the evening matches then!
Will wait for a nice sunny 3.00pm kick off!

Thanks

The thing to take from this time of year is the 3pm KO is dark in the second half with light fading by HT

your best bet to practice maybe a local Sunday league team, not sure time down south but its usually a 10:30am KO up here
