Edit My Images
Yes
I've opened a flickr account and uploaded some of my images but not sure if I should edit the settings so only a select few can see them or allow anyone to look. What does everyone else do  Should I watermark/copyriht them

Interesting question, I was told yesterday that ANYONE going via the flickr API can now legally take ANY IMAGE ON THE SITE and use it for ANY purpose they see fit.

I don't really care as my images are not going to make me a penny, but for some, I would worry about it.

Not sure what the solution is, but if what I heard is true, it really puts a dampner on the platform, and I really enjoy using it too.

Gary.

I only have one set that is private (and that is really old photos from a pretty rubbish camera, but I just wanted to have them online in case I ever need them) The rest I have public, but I only upload 800pixel shots max and always have my url/watermark thingy on them...it is a shame, but seems to be what is needed these days :(

Have you got a link to your flickr page?

I watermarked mine and left them open so everyone can look.

Not quite true - there is a problem with the Flickr API that is allowing people to do that at the moment....but it goes against the Flickr T&Cs and a lot of the services using it seem to be getting stopped...but it is isn't a case of the "they can" it is a case of "they are, but shouldn't be"

JL any more details? My friend was pretty vague, would love to know more...

Not quite - in general commercial uses of the API aren't allowed. Sure, your pic can be displayed on other websites using the API, but you don't lose any IP control.

I upload large size images. If you've got a pro account you get a stats page and you can see where people are coming from to see your photos. To date I've not had an issue and I've had a few people approach me asking permission to use some of my photos for various purposes.

Hi DD

I've made three groups with mine, one called 365 and Everything else And the last one is Nature

I have set my Everything else and Nature one so just friends can view them but my 365 one i have set so anyone can view it

I do use a small watermark on my images :)

Hope that helps

Tony

IMO depends on why you have created a flickr account. For me it was specifically to get people looking at my pics and making comments. Therefore, the more people who see them the better. To add to this I seek out groups/pools to join and add the pics too, and also make sure they're tagged properly. I'm already finding traffic coming directly from google due to the tags and image names/descriptions.

If you just want to use flickr to 'host' pics then just friends and family might be an idea, cos I think you should still be able to link directly to the images for posting them on here, whilst ensuring the casual browser won't stumble across/steal em.

Hi Tony  that is helpful thank you :)

I posted my images to get them seen I suppose so perhaps I should copyright or watermark them. Don't have family or friends who'd be interested in looking. Thanks for getting my thought processes going 68lbs :)

PS - you've got some very good pictures up there

My take would be that it depends on whether you are generating revenue from the images. If you are, then you may lose money from people infringing your copyright. If not then there's no downside to having people use your images; but if someone uses one and you happen to catch them then you can invoice them and get some cash out of it. I wish my pictures were good enough to be stolen!

I'm not generating any income would like to and you've given me some more food for thought :)

Hi Tony  that is helpful thank you :)

Just thought i would say aswell, I've started uploading only 500px × 333px to flickr and hosting them on another site for the bigger version to post on the forum and then making the photo clickable to flick

Did that make sense?

Best not to post anything on the net if you don't want some unscrupulous person using it. I only post up 800 pixels on the largest side so if my images are used the print quality is reduced and not worth a carrot apart for web use of course. I haven't had any problems with flickr or it's users to date that I know of.

800???

Is 500px too small then?

Sorry about the hijack.....:runaway:

As a small asside... only 6% of my traffic has come from TP - either people clicking on my sig link or viewing larger copies of any images I post.

I find that figure quite low :(

But it does go some way to illustrating how it's best to put any pics in threads as people dont bother clicking links to view images.

Thanks for all the advice folks it's very much appreciated.
I don't mind the hijack Tony

How would you know if someone had stolen or used an image from your flickr collection
