After using FlickR a lot when I first started out in 2008, I now find that I am using it less and less.

I use Facebook to share pictures with my Family / Friends, and have my own website for sales / enquiries from my Boxing photography etc. As such, I find that I am hardly ever uploading stuff to FlickR anymore.

What other uses do people have for FlickR? Is it a good way of generating general interest in your shots - and then pointing them to your own website etc?

Keen to get peoples opinions on this one .....

Never used it, I also use fb and my own site. Have thought about it though so will be interested in replies.

I like it to act as an online portfolio that I can quickly add to amend on-the-fly. Plus, it gives me access to some inspirational images from other people, and some of the groups can be handy for associated info on what the group specialises in.

I have my own website but, so far, haven't really taken it seriously on that front - for the time being flickr does a job and does it well. :)

Flickr stores the exif data, and an easily accessible full res version (if pro).

Facebook is a social network for talking crap, organising ****ups and posting crap drunken mobile phone photos from clubs.

Flickr is for more serious image storage and viewing.

I think Flickr is a good way of showing your work to a very wide audience. If a pic is tagged well and titled appropriately then there is every chance of it being found.

I guess the real question is .. 'what do you want from flickr'? If your looking to sell? then flickr can work ...... it has for me

I have tried various photo sharing sites and flickr seems to win in most areas. Facebook will only show a small size (720x479) but with flickr you can view various sizes including original (unless you choose to limit it).

FB might work if you have loads of friends also mad about photography, but most of my contacts on FB mainly seem to post shots of themselves partying or endless shots of their babies (yawn!).

I mainly use Flickr for looking at other peoples images and learning about exposures from their EXIF data and do upload my photos but am hampered by not having a Pro account so have to keep waiting a month to upload! What i was told the other day is that in the small print on FB it states that they own all images on FB! Obviously Flickr has Creative Commons options to protect your images. I love Flickr for viewing other peoples images and being inspired.

I only use FlickR to post on here. No need to use it otherwise - clients get prints or other products, family and friends get emails or FB.

The 4 sales I've had from my photography have come from Flickr. I also get quite a few enquiries that don't come to fruition, mainly because they don't want to pay!! I'm not a pro, and don't promote my work comercially (although I have joined Alamy recently) so it's a good way to let other people see my work. And, as a others have said, I use it for inspiration too, by seeing other people's work.

Funny this should come up. I had a account and decided I was going to start up a website so deleted it. To be honest I wasn't updating it much at that point anyway.

Now 4 months later, I still haven't got the website up and running as I am still deciding where I am going to go with it as a business.

So, I started a new account today and I am going to use it to show some personal work and potentially get some people interested in me once I do get my website up and running. Not sure if it will work for that, but it's worth a shot I suppose.

I'm the only person on the planet that's neither on FB, nor wants to be on FB, so Flickr is a really useful way of sharing my pics

nah, your a light weight, be the 2nd person on the planet that's neither on SpaceFace, t***ter, MYbook or Flickr, nor wants to be...:D

Doesn't Facebook have rights to use any image that you upload, or something along those lines? If you're serious, I wouldn't upload them there just incase. I use flickr because it's an easy way to show friends and family my work and as others have said, for inspiration.

Add me to the list of NOOOO to FB!!!!!!!!!!

I sometimes use flickr to upload photos if I sell things on forums. It sometimes easier to show prospective buyers a high res pic

You're not alone. And my mobile phone is about 5 years old now so none of this crap on it either.

Flickr generates a lot of interest if you tag comprehensively. Viewing your stats daily also shows what search criteria was used to find your image. A pro account is peanuts, well worth it.

Photobucket is better than flickr

Pretty much the same reason for me. I like receiving comments from peers too without having to post on forums. I paid to get the pro account for more flexibility. It's also a great place to keep and link to images instead of imageshack (which I do use for other stuff though).

Really? 99% of the pics on Flickr are crap, yet generate "great shot!" type responses. On the whole Flickr is for people that want their ego massaged.

Facebook is for social and business networking, hence the creation of Facebook Pages. Unless, of course, the likes of Coca Cola, Nikon, Canon, Alamy and Ventura Studios have got it completely wrong as well.

The only official business that you are allowed to conduct on Flickr is with Getty and their prohibitive terms and restrictions.

Mind you, Flickr gets far more amusing once you've turned the safe search feature off.

I thought this was the reason Flickr was created?
Well, that and where else would the internet keep all the HDR images?

It might be for you, but I ignore any "Like 'insert random company'".

I joined Facebook when you still needed a valid university email to join, and it was a fair better place back then. I joined Facebook for communicating with my friends.

I use flickr because it a cheap, effective way for people to see my pics. People being football players, managers, families of the above etc. Keeps the image quality too, facebook tends to make pics look slightly naff, as well as smaller. Dont really do the 'social' thing on there though.

I use FlickR to generate traffic to my website/blog, aswell as acting as a sort of backup source. It's relatively cheap (£24 iirc?) and is a great way to display your work to a large audience quickly. Analytics for my blog/website prove that a fair amount of traffic comes from FlickR

$24.95 so less in sterling.

I use Flickr for hosting primarily but YES I use it for quite a bit of ego massaging and I don't care who knows it... No other F***er is gonna do it.;)

Apologies - but self-confessed Flickr addict here.

I tend to fly under the radar (not dump in groups) and enjoy the bantar of a hand-picked group of contacts purely interested in the love of photography and not views. I've learned alot from there.

yup - I need to post on here more often too. ;)

I've put a couple of pics on facebook but as someone has already asked above, I've heard something about dodgy copyright if you put them direct on there? Most of my facebook posts are links to flickr.

In my opinion, Flickr is generally for certain sorts of popular catchy styles and I've seen it scare would be great photographers off, as it can be overwhelming and misleading. No one in my local tog group takes it very seriously at all. I've learnt a lot there though which would've taken me years otherwise.

I think any online site which has a mass audience is just another tool to be visible if that's what you want. Flickr's better for photo management.

its good for inspiration i think. i reckon its good to see what people think of your pictures who dont know you aswell. it is such a huge collection of pictures too, i could spend a long time flicking through them all there is some truly amazing stuff out there

I use flickr to communicate with Photographers. Facebook is to communicate to friends for me. Obviously I've got contacts on both but to show off my pics I prefer to have crit from photography minded people :)
