I find I'm using Flickr a lot more recently, is it worthwhile to go pro ? What are the benefits ?

And how much does it cost ?

According to https://www.flickr.com/account/upgrade/pro you get "Advanced stats on your photos" which, if you know what that is, might or might not be useful to you. Maybe if you are using it professionally or get involved in other Flikr features it might be important. It all seems just gimmicks to me as a hobbyist.

However, the killer feature: "Wear your Pro with pride. Your Pro badge will be displayed next to your avatar" Who can resist? Yeehaw!

You forgot the 'Free from adds' bit, 'save on merchandise shipping' bit, and '20% off Adobe Cloud' bit!
Still not worth it to me though.
Must admit I did like the stats with pro, but for me, not worth paying for.

Well I don't get it. I only see ads if I'm viewing whilst not logged in, except that there's an unavoidable ad incorporated into the log-in screen. Apart from those circumstances, I see none at all.

The discount on CC subs is likely a hook that'll expire a year or two on. And who needs 'stats'?

I love the meaningless fakery of the word 'pro' too, as if it's meant to make you feel better about yourself ...

There is Youpic which provides plenty of stats, no adverts and is completely free. (https://youpic.com/signin?redirect=/home)
There is also a grading system which I cannot fathom, so ignore that. I'm currently on grade 6 out of 20 heading towards being 7th grade. Wowee!
Not sure how many members it has, but my shots are getting four or five times the views that they do on flickr.

And how much does it cost ?

The prices are in dollars, auto conversion kicks in when credit card details are accepted.
$49.00 per annum, $5.99 per month. But you seem to get less for your monthly payment although you pay more!
Not sure how that works!

To be honest I've never even noticed the ads, and my pics don't get viewed enough for me to be bothered with stats, excellent, just saved myself $49 ;)

I must admit, I pay the $50 to be rid of the adverts I'm pretty much sick of being advertised at.

Hmm. Pro costs me $44.95 for 2 years at the moment. Is the price changing?

The main advantage of Pro for me was that you can replace images once uploaded and the links stay functional. Say for example I tweak the processing, re-publish via Lightroom, it means any previous links to the images on other servcies (such as TP!) still work. With a none-pro account, a new link gets generated each time you re-publish.

That was certainly true 12 months ago - may not be the case anymore though.

I've not seen ads. I don't have adblocker or anything either. And the rest only applies if you spend out more money. So if you don't want it, it's worthless.

Don't see them myself
I do have ad-blocker
I wont spend more money
I don't want it, its worthless!
In other words I agree! :D

I think we've thoroughly rubbished the pro version now. Except for those who want the Pro badge of honour but won't admit it.

Existing pro accounts get a price freeze for two years then it's $50 a year.

I quite enjoy the stats (nerd) but not anywhere near enough to pay thirty quid a year!

Just had another look and theres a NEW PLAN!
It will now be $6.00 a month and $50.00 a year!
No thanks Flickr.

...or those who do find value in the (admittedly) limited extra features. The new pricing may well be a step too far, but you're not really in a position to judge where others find 'value'.

Yes. Most important for the OP, who might be in a different position. Which is why I wrote "might or might not be useful to you." and added a helpful link.

And then we went on to rubbish the gimmicks without even comparing the Flikr "PRO" badge of honour to other badges of honour to see which is best.

It used to be the case that the free Flickr contract had a limit on maximum storage, a limit on how many images you could upload in a day, and a limit on the max size of image (in terms of pixels) Flickr would keep. IIRC you could upload a bigger image, but Flickr would downsize it if necessary, along with producing the range of intermediate sizes down to thumbnail that they do for every image. They've kept announcing upgrades to their free account, and I'm not sure how many of those it has removed. Their own descriptions of their services are a bit vague in places, but I get the impression they've now removed all of these limitations in the free acounts on storage, image size, and numbers. Is this correct?

I stopped using flickr quite a while ago due to the 200 image limit and not having the available money to upgrade. Just had a look now and there's a 1000GB limit on the free accounts which seems significantly more use able.

We're still going to grizzle that 1000GB is not enough though! It'd never occur to us to open a second free account.

The free 1TB is a useful alternative to paid cloud storage for backing up your photo library. I'm in the process of migrating 5k+ images, mostly old photos I'd taken when digital first came out, so file sizes are small compared to todays.

I dont use pro either and do have ad blocker for firefox so no ads. Not bothered about stats nice if people comment or view and you can see that for free.

Gaz

+1 on that.

I have a lot of photos on Flickr but frankly since they started "improving" it I doubt I'll be renewing my subs, especially at the new price.

I much preferred the old style Flickr and stats where I could see everything at a glance - now it's all been changed it takes ages more to get the same info!
