I would like to buy a flashgun for my D700. Budget £150-£200, secondhand is ok. Haven't really gota clue what to get. Any advice greatly appreciated. Doesn't have to be a Nikon flashgun.
You'll get a new SB-600 or a secondhand SB-800 for around the £200 mark. £150 will buy you a used SB-600, no point in buying a non-Nikon flash for that sort of money.
Or if you could stretch a little more, possibly an SB-800. I think someone sold one on here for £220 recently. You'll have to be quick though, FG's on here sell in seconds.
Have a look at both the SB-600 and SB-800 and see what they have that you need.
You might even only need an SB-400 - it depends on what you are planning on doing with it
I paid £156 for my sb600 but they have gone up loads since. I also have a Nissin Di622 which is similar in performance to the sb600 at a much lower price (£99) It works with the iTTL system and also off camera using the 300/700 as commander, supporting Nikons CLS, so is worth a thought. The only thing it wont do is work off camera using an optical (photocell) slave detector.
But the OP stated he had a budget of £200 - even with a push to £250, you're not going to get a working SB-900 for that.
True, what I was trying to say is, you wouldn't put a mini headlight on a Rolls Royce.
I think a 700 is just this side of 2K, don't think I would put a S/H 600 on the top. Depends on what you want to shoot I suppose
As above....£200 (maybe + postage) will get you a 2nd hand SB-800 (I just sold mine for this amount) or £150 (ish) for an SB-600. They are both fine flashes and will complement the D300/D700 very nicely indeed.
If you get one of these flashes you can take advantage of Nikon's off-camera wireless flash system (the wireless commander is already built in to your camera).

As you can with the Nissin Di622 at £99, not everyone wants to pay the crazy OEM prices for flash guns, especially if you dont reckon on getting much use out of it. I am sure many folk put Sigma and other lens on the D300, dont see why its any different with flashes!
(I have an SB600 and the Di622, both well built and equally effective although the Nikon is "nicer" but so it should be for the price!)

All flashguns are actually made for full frame cameras, with a DX crop you actually waste the light.
There is absolutely no reason not to use an SB600 on even a D3.
Until you start requiring some of the extra features the higher end models offer then there is no reason to buy more than the SB600. Yes its GN is slightly less, but as an all round solution its the best bank for buck flash you could buy.

I have a couple of SB600's and would have no problem using them on D3, D3x, D700 or D300, they are lighter weight that the SB800 or SB900, and to be honest the SB800 & SB900 units have features that I would never use.
