Looking to upgrade my flash from the cheaper Jessops one i currently have.

I'd be looking to spend £140-£180 on a 2nd hand one.

Any idea what's the best to get?

i've been looking at the Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flashgun, but i'm unsure if a non canon make would be better?
 
If you want to stick with Canon, and you're happy 2nd hand, then you can get a 550EX or, if you're willing to wait for a good deal, a 580EX for the money you're talking about. They're both great flashes, and they can operate as a wireless master too if that's important to you.

Personally I'd see if I could get a 580, if not, and if you don't care about master, then the 430 or the 550 if you do.

Another option would be to get something like a YN 565EX, and with the money you save get a cheap stand, brolly and trigger and play with it off camera :)

just to clear things up - you are saying a 580ex is better than a 430exII
 
"Better" is a tricky one.. the 430 II is newer, but the 580 is more powerful and can act as a master.

Like I said, personally I'd take the 580, but if you'd rather have a newer flash, and aren't bothered about master capability, then a 430 II might suite you better. I wouldn't be too concerned about age though, there's still plenty of old film flashes that are still going strong :-)

No idea, you didn't say which model it was, does it act as an ETTL wireless slave?
 
Sorry it's the Jessops 360AFD Digital.

I've looked though the description, but not sure what it can do.
 
It looks like it can be used as a dumb slave, so you'll be able to use it if you put the flash in manual (to disable pre-flashes), but not using it as an ETTL slave.

Still not sure what to do :D

I'll hold out a few days and see if a good 2nd 580EX appears, if not i'll pick up a 430exII
 
Shameless plug, but I have a Metz 58 AF2 for sale in the classifieds.
It's aimed at the 580ii so has a very similar spec.
Great flash.
