I have a Nikon D3100, I can buy a new Yongnuo YN560 or a used SB400 for about the same price. Which would you recommend?

Are you happy setting the power output on the flash manually? If not then the SB400 is your better choice, although I'd suggest a Jessops 360AFD as a better alternative...

Thanks for the suggestion, it looks a good buy but when I looked it up it said, for Canon. Will it work on Nikon?

No, you need the Nikon version, if you can't find a new one then they turn up secondhand both here and on Ebay for £40 or so...

I managed to pick up a second hand nissin di622 mark 2 on eBay for £60, I'm really happy with it. I've got that on my d3100. The jessops ones were going for about £50-55 at the time
