has anyone ever experienced this?
or have any ideas what i may be doing wrong?
on my d80 i have just attached my new nikon 18-200 vr and taken some test shots checking out the zoom & vr
some though, indoors at 1/60 with flash, and VR on seem to come out very dark like the flash didnt fire.. try same shot again and its really well lit flash obviously did fire.
on the theory that the flash is triggering with the shutter depress, but the shutter itself is delayed due to VR trying to stabilise the image, i tried a rear sync flash setting but am still occasionally seeing the same issues.
any thoughts? or should i just not be using vr with flash?

It should all work just dandy - I've a D200+18-200VR+SB600 and never had a problem. The VR actually begins working as soon as you depress the shutter half-way (ie. to lock focus) and on my setup I can hear it gently whirring away and the image in the viewfinder becomes rock solid. I took about 90 shots yesterday at a birthday party and on every one the flash fired as expected.

Are you using the built-in flash or a hot-shoe mounted one?

twas built in flash, and not firing off like crazy, flash should be fully charged

Never had a problem myself with VR and flash. I have the 70-300mm VR. Like unclerichy says the VR kicks in as soon as the shutter is half pressed so it shouldn't be delaying anything.
