Hi folks

I have recently started to indulge myself in football photography at my local non-league club. I love it and hope to keep developing my skills (which are limited at present!) as I get a real buzz from it.

The problem I have is low light levels. When we have an evening kick-off I am struggling with light levels with about 20 mins to go, even on the highest ISO setting. I cannot afford a zoom with a wide aperture at present so I wondered if a flash would be the answer? It would also help me in other situations.

Over what sort of distance could I expect a flash to help with the light levels? Also as I would be shooting at a fast shutter speed (usually 1/320 and above), would the flash even work? I have no experience using a flash gun so please excuse my ignorance.

I currently use a Sony a350 with a Sigma 70-300 APO (f4 - f5.6) when shooting football. Any help, advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. :)

no, it usually ****es people off

seen remote flash used to great advantage in indoor basketball games (I assume would work for indoor footy)

but on camera flash at a distance looks ****, use it when you have to but not if you don't

Flash generally doesnt work at a football match unless you ahve a lampost strapped to your back.. your simply not going to light up enough of the scene... also its usually not allowed for quite simple reasons :)

Thanks for the input folks. I had a feeling the responses given would be the answers!

I knew the thought of flash might have been far from accepted at the footy but hoped to be proven wrong. And if the distance isn't gonna work (even though I am at pitch side) then I guess I am gonna have to go back to the drawing board.

Looks like I'm just gonna have to give up the evening games when we head through the autumn. :(

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate.. But winter 3pm kick offs arnt going to be any better.. 3.30ish and the floodlights are on.. its a combination of shorter days and bad weather.. same as a night match by half time....

Funnily enough Kipax I was just starting to think about that... I guess I am gonna have to be as on form as possible for as long as he light permits!

Either that or miraculously be able to afford a high end lens with a very wide aperture at at least 200mm :)
