Ok - seems to be the obvious place to put this question.

What actually causes the flash gun to operate?

Is it effectively a "short circuit" across two of the hot shoe pins? or something all a bit more clever.

Looking to make a sound activation for a flashgun (probably SB800) and not sure how to connect the circuit to the flash gun?

Google for 'sound flash trigger circuit' and you'll find plenty of circuit diagrams. Or, for the simplest possible circuit, I guess you need a microphone, a Schmidt trigger and a solid-state relay? (I say solid-state because I think a mechanical relay is too slow.)

If you wanted to add an adjustable time delay, I guess you'd need a tiny capacitor and variable resistor in the Schmidt circuit. I can't remember how exactly to do it - AS level Electronics was a while ago!
