Flash In The Pan's softbox - much different to an umbrella?

Hi,

I'm looking for a portable strobist set and was about to purchase the Westcott umbrella style softbox where the flash fires 'backwards' into the silver material then this is reflected forwards.

I then came across FITP's offering and given the difference in price this looks like a viable alternative!

The thing is FITP's works by the flash firing forwards straight into the translucent material i.e. how an umbrella works. Now I know the SB will prevent spill however am I right in thinking the Westcott would probably give the 'better' light (softer) than FITPs? Would there be any way round this for example using a tupperware style diffuser?

Thanks!
Joe.

Those Westcotts have some practical disadvantages. Better solution for nice even output is a secondary diffusion panel and/or a Stofen-type diffuser over the flash. You can get both from FITP.

No idea about the westcott but the brollybox I got from FiTP fires the flash into the silver umbrella lining which reflects back out through the translucent material (but he has a shoot through alternative I seem to remember). Drop him a message for clarification, but I am very happy with his brollybox and would recommend them. Combine with his bargain price and it a, well, bargain.
