Looking at buying my first flash or my Canon 550D. Any advise regarding the YongNuo YN-565EX or Nissin di 866 flash would be appreciated. Read reviews and both appear okay but trust this site more for guidance.

All the tests I have read on the Yongnuo say that they are very unreliable. I have 4 Nissin Di622 and they are offer excellent performance for the money and have been totally reliable and can be had for about £110 you may not have to go for the Di822 to get all the performance you need.

Another good point about either Nissin is spares availability. I dropped one of my Di622's from about 3m high onto a tiled floor, breaking the front diffuser and a back panel although the flash still worked perfectly. I ordered the bits of the UK importer for about £10 off the shelf and they arrived next day.

Cheers initially I was going to go for the Nissin and think I still might

I've got a Nissin Di866 and it's fantastic. I use it mostly on my 60D while I use my 580EX II on my 5D3 but the Nissin has been used off camera quite a few times to great effect. I got a Nissin Di622 MkI for the wife when she had a 550D, and she hadn't ever used it on the 550D before she got a 650D and the Di622 MkI isn't compatible with the 650D so I've just sold it. I'm thinking of letting the mrs have my Di866 and getting the MkII or a different Canon flash, maybe a 430EX II this time.

The Nissin in the classifieds in the post above is no longer for sale as I've bought it. I was so impressed with the original Di866 I got that I've handed it over to the wife and will now use the 'new' MkII on my 60D instead. Had it not been part of a package when I got a 5D2, 24-105 f4 L and 580EX II then I wouldn't have gone for the 580, but would have gone for another Di866 instead.

I personally have a Yongnuo-565EX and love it. It has worked flawlessly for me and does everything I need it to. It is also pretty powerful. The only significant features I feel it is missing is the ability to act as a commander flash and high speed sync but neither of these are an issue for me as I use it indoors and on its own using my built in flash on my 60D as a commander.

I've just recently bought a Di866 mkII, features are good for the price. However I can take all of a dozen shots before it overheats :( I'm just trying to find out if this is expected or if I've got a dud!
