I have just bought a 580 flash for my canon.
I am using it for the first time tonight.
And i dont have a chance to practice with it. As batteries are on charge.
I've had a scout through the manual.
Is there anything vital i need to know before going out there..
Is there a general setting i can have it on.. ???

Set camera to M shutter 125 @f5.6 ISO 400. Flash to ETTL. Take a couple of test shots when you get there. If background is too dark increase ISO. If subjects are underexposed increase the flash (not sure if you can increase by third or half stop with your camera).

not sure what to increase it to..? Do you know.. ?

Try to bounce it off the ceiling and increase flash compensation to +2/3. 1/250s and ISO200 works fine whithout the risk of motion blur.

Also have a look for a ring flash adapter if you shoot with it directly.
