is tehre a muppets guide to using flash?

i have a 430 ex that tbh i have just left on the settings it was on when it came out of the box

99% of my photography is outdoors but i am going to have to do some indoors stuff at some point or use fill in flash (see I know some of the terminology... just not what it actually means :) )

so can anyone point me to a good guide for muppets?

There are some web sites with a huge amount of information on using flash and I'm sure someone will post some links soon.

As a starter suggestion... for indoors with no useful other light put the camera on Manual (even if you normally use auto...just do it) and set it to 100 iso f8 and 1/200th. That will make the flash decide how much light to make for a good exposure. Then just try it out indoors. After you are used to it you can vary the settings to see the differences.

Fill flash means taking a normal non flash picture (so the camera settings have to be right for the exposure not arbitrary like above) and then the flash just adds a bit of light. just remember in low light that can mean slow shutter speeds and possible blurs from movement.

I am happy shooting on manual (normally do anyhow) but tbh I very very rarely have to use flash as I shoot outdoors 99.9% of the time in reasonable light.

I do know that I am going to have to shoot in a sports hall soon and will get that horrible yellow tinge to everything if I dont us a flash.

pingu .. you sound just like me.. i just dont get flash... have it constantly on iso 400, f5.6 and 250 shutter speed.. (1dmkII allows 250 if you switch flash to high shutter)

Thats all I do... oh and keep my fingers crossed

Mostly i shoot without flash.. cus I cant get me head around it :)
