Hi im looking for a flash for my R7 as im interested in doing macro photography, I just got a macro lens and while searching on amazon I noticed that there were comments about compatibility and how some canon flashes wont work on the r7 because of camera settings, so I was hoping that other R7 users out there that are happy with their camera flashes could point me in the right direction on what flash to buy. Thank you in advance.

As no one else has jumped in.

The R7 has the new Canon hot shoe that’s missing the centre pin, so lots of ‘compatible’ flashes won’t work.

Though I believe all genuine Canon ETTL2 flashes will work fine. However that’s not a lot of help if you’re looking for a macro setup.

*also there may be a firmware fix for later Godox flashes which makes them an option.

The Godox TT685 has a firmware update (which is a pain in the hole on a Windows 10/11 box, simple on a Windows 7 box due to driver signing), the TT685IIC works out of the box. From memory the V860IIC needs a firmware update & the V860IIIC works out of the box. No clue on the V1C (which is essentially a V860III with a round head) so I presume it is either natively compatible or there's a firmware update.

its a shame that you can't use flash for focus stacking on the R7.Its a great feature for macro photography .

I have the mt24ex twin flash and it dose not like the r7 it works but not properly you get the error 70 now and then which is a pain so I use it on my r5 its ok but my friends have the Nissin MF18 Ring Light/Macro Flash Canon its brilliant on the r7 if you want to see her work look on flicker at what she dose with it when my flash stops working I will Def move to the above hope this helps you
