OK... I have a Sigma Flash. The 3 settings are.. TTL, Low & High.

I want to be able to shoot portraits outside, under exposing the back ground by a stop such as images you have all seen before.
The problem I have is that where i dont have options such as ½power etc.
I can't set the shot up sunder exposed, and adjust the flash power accordingly to light the subject correctly.

Buying another flashgun right now isn't an option.

Can anyone give me advice on how to go about using my flashgun to achieve the results I need?

Or am I totally wasting my time?

Thanks in advance.

expose for the flash then build in the ambient witht he shutter speed at thatiso and aperture

I've used full power only guns before (only cos I had to mind) and thats how you do it

You could also move the flash further away from the subject, or stick something in front of it to reduce the light...

Presumably the flash does E-TTL auto? Which model is it? Does it not have +/- exposure compensation on the gun itself?

If it does, shoot in Av and use the +/- compensation on the gun to moderate the flash exposure, and +/- compensation on the camera to moderate ambient exposure level.

Between the two, you should have plenty of control there to do what you're wanting. It is easier than fiddling about with full manual control.

This is the flashgun in question...

It doesn't have ± exposure on the gun. Can I give the compensation on the camera itself as I can give compensation for both flash and exposure?

I'm not sure what control you have with that gun. You'll have to check out the handbook and the check out the camera menus.

If you shoot in E-TTL, you can moderate the shutter speed to darken the background in the way that you want, assuming that you are happy with the flash exposure. That's option A.

And if you put the gun in one of its manual modes, you can adjust the f/number and ISO to get exactly the flash exposure you want (if the E-TTL exposure isn't quite to your liking) then adjust the shutter speed to moderate the background.
