Yes
I have an L shaped bracket for off camera flash which doubles as a grip.
It has a metal hotshoe, and I'm not sure if it will damage my flash if I mount it into the metal hotshoe.
any thoughts?

Metal on metal will of course scratch but the degree will depend on how carefully you handle it and where/how both surfaces meet.

Without a picture I can't provide a better answer than that.

It's not actually physical damage I'm concerned about, but electrical damage if the pins on the bottom of the flash are in contact with the metal hotshoe on the bracket....

I can't see how that would cause a problem but perhaps I'm missing something.

Anyone care to enlighten us?

I presume you are wondering if the all metal assembly will short across the pins in the base of the flash unit?

Guys this bracket is not designed for hot shoe flashes eg modern flashes., It was designed in a era when the flashguns electrical connection was from the flash to the camera via a cable rather than pins on the flashgun to a hotshoe..

The brackets only 18 months old.
I last used it with a metz 36 flash and a sync cable, but my current nissin has several slave/wireless modes and can work without a cable.
Do you know if the pins on the flash hotshoe are still active when used as a slave etc?

I know, I used to use quite a few of them and still have a sync cable somewhere!
