Hi all,

I'm after any helpful advice on suitable fairly low-budget flashguns for a Nikon D40.

I'd love to go for a Nikon speedlite 700 or 900 but simply can't afford it (budget around £100)

(i'd look at the classifieds for 2nd hand but i can't get to it because of the number of posts rule - which to me is crazy for a newbie like me, but that's another story/thread!)

I got given a Speedlite SB400 as a christmas present which, whilst is much better than the on-board flash, doesn't give me the kind of flexibility I'm after offered by the better flashguns especially now i'd like to do some basic portrait photography.

I've looked at the Nissin flashguns but really don't know if they are a good lower budget option or not?

Ideally i'd like to play with off-camera flash with whatever I end up with so will need to look into a suitable wireless trigger and receiver(any suggestions?)

Chris.

Hi Chris,

I was in the same position as you and did have a look at the Nissin range, they are okay.

Others to look at for a cheap option are:

1. Jessops 360AFD £80 at present.
2. Yongnuo from Fleebay
3. Metz

In the end I saved up and bought a second hand SB800 for about £180 from London Camera Exchange. When it arrived it looked like new with everything apart from the diffuser included.

Might also be worth looking at a second hand SB600, a few in stock at LCE and mpbphotographic.co.uk.

Cheers kev. Is there a major difference between the SB600 and SB800/900? (or are they the kind of features which don't really apply to a relative amatuer? :) )

I had looked at the jessops one - just seems a bit too plasticky/fragile to me, just my feeling though!

Chris.

I was in a similar position when I wanted to play about with off camera flash. I eventually went for a SB700 and whilst it's a very nice flash I wouldn't buy it again now that I'm a bit more in the know :)

Chris.

Have a look here for info on both 600 and 800:

Are you going to be doing off camera flash?

personally when it comes to flash like these, i tried a 3rd party option and that was it, didn't like it and went nikon (sb600) all the way.

nikon are better investment to the camera bag too :)

MPB have some cheap SB600s in, but they're about £130ish if you can stretch to that. Good, solid flash :)

Thanks all - i'll keep my eye out for cheap sb-600's i think. (pity i can't browse the classifieds - i used to be able to!)

Chris.
