Toying with the Idea of Fixed focal length lenses rather than a zoom.
Posibly looking at getting 2 more to go with my nifty 50, a 28mm and the 100mm macro.

My main interest is landscapes, portraits and general out and about stuff. I'd like to try some macro work as I find it very interesting....

Any thoughts or advice on the subject?

TIA
Andy

28mm on digital isnt wide wide, just average.

For a prime wide angle lens you are looking in the region of 14mm. Here there are only a couple of choices but the Sigma 14 f/2.8 is meant to be pretty good.

Zooms are not as bad as you might think, technology has moved on somewhat and they produce some fantastic results. Namely the 12-24 f/4 by Nikon but the 10-22 Canon is susposed to be quite good too.

Unless you have two bodies, you will find yourself swapping lenses a lot and this can prove tedious.

King.

The above is based on 1.6 and 1.5 cropped bodies.

Not too fussed about wide! Was thinking the 28mm would be a nice starting point for portraits? works out at about 44mm with the 1.6 crop of the 30D

The 100mm macro gets good reviews.

Seriously tho it does depend on what you are intending to shoot.

If its people then 70-110mm is about ideal. A bit more reach needed then go up to 200.

Prime will allways get you better results than a prime (oops) zoom.

That said...

If you can stretch far enough then you wont go worse than the 70-200L f2.8/f4 [IS if you can afford it]
Nearly prime results from a zoom lens.

For wide....I'd go for a small zoom ...10-20mm; it just gives that bit of flexibility and if you leave it somewhere in the middle, reduces the risk of those strange things that happen at the extremes.....

For mid range, I'd definately go with the 100mm macro (that's my next dream buy)

I do love my 24-70 though........don't want to hurt it's feelings.....;)

If I had the choice & the photography jobs that I got didn't need the flexibility of a zoom lens then it'd be prime all the way for me, no contest at all IMHO.
Sharpness difference is very noticeable to me & my compositional ideas have had to improve loads since I have to zoom with my feet
IMO, primes force you to think more about your photography, I do own the 70-200 2.8 L IS but would take the 200 prime & mid range prime over it if I could.

100mm Macro is my next dream lens too

Cheers All,
I already have the 70-200L f4 which I really like. I dont need to go above 200mm...
The 24-70L is my next choice... I just want my options open simply because of the price of the 24-70!!!!
