hiya all, I'm hoping you can offer some assistance, I'm considering a trip to the isle of wight for the first time since i was little however I'm limited to the use of public transport and have only got one full day there. my dilemma is whether to go to Fishbourne and explore around there, or visit Ryde and make use of the railway along the coast, id be traveling from Portsmouth.
ideally id like to focus on landscape/wildlife photography.
any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks

Fishbourne is OK by car, but if you want buses, trains and taxis then you need to go to Ryde. (y)

There's a very small nature reserve (with a hide) if you walk along from Ryde Esplanade to Seaview and there are normally a nice selection of birds there:

You should see some Red Squirrels if you walk through the park and woodland area that is just set back from the beach at Appley.

If you like swans, ducks and geese, there are always lots on the Canoe Lake. Not the wildlife you're looking for I'm sure, but you can get some good close ups.

Ryde and Appley beaches are nice for seascape shots of Portsmouth, boats and the Solent Forts.

There are plenty of places to eat and drink on the Esplanade.

An open-top bus is available if you want a tour of the downs for some landscape/view shots with a good chance of seeing Kestrels and Buzzards:

You may find this handy if you're going to use the bus: https://www.islandbuses.info/app

hi, that's brilliant, many thanks for such in-depth knowledge and the attached links. i think im leaning more towards ryde at the moment, my only concern and having not been for close to 20yrs is whether ryde and the main touristy stops on the island line route are going to be too touristy and detract from the photography side of things.

Ah! Yes, the tourists are a curse coastal resorts have to suffer every summer - prices increase and roads become mobile car parks during the school holidays. The local businesses and economy are dependent on them visiting though, so unfortunately there's no avoiding them. :grumpy:

I can't see that they would cause you any problems and if you avoid the school holidays, it will obviously help.

Lol, it was a great day, a little on the warm side by the afternoon but well worth it, unfortunately the red squirrels in Appley park were elusive but there was a fair amount of woodpeckers there.
