Hi all :)

Just come back on holiday, and wanted to share this with you.

I basically went to this restaurant, and in this menu under "Western Food" it had: "Fish and Chips", so I ordered it.

When it came to me, it was a battered fish and a packet of crisps...

Be careful when buying fish and chips! I think it must be called Fish and French Fries then.

:)

Bloody foreigners eh??:D:D

Just as well you did not order fish fingers

My brother was in a restaurant in Spain a few years ago. He wasn't sure what he ordered but from the words he could nake out on the menu, he thought it might be some sort of egg fried rice and a something else with tomatoes as the main ingredient.

He got a bowl of rice, a fried egg and a bottle of ketchup.

Steve.

You went abroad and ordered "western food"?

Adventurous, aren't you? ;)

Not abroad but in southport, now bear in mind it used to be in Lancashire and all the family live in Lancashire so the accent plays a factor in this one. I once went for a meal with my family. My grandad ordered a lager for himself and a bitter lemon for my grandma. He received a pint with a piece of lemon in it

I'm sure I posted but don't know what's happened.

I reckon it's down to US English-speaking countries that call crisps chips and call chips fries.

I think the UK is the only country that doesn't call crisps chips. I can't think of another. We're in the minority.

I'd have sent it back and asked for what I'd ordered in the first place!

Especially "oop North" Where I am.

But that is what was ordered. Iirc, most European countries call crisps chips

Chips are crisps in SA, if they're a snack, but most restaurants use "chips" in the UK sense. Fries is pretty much confined to US chains like McDonalds. Some people use "slap chips" (Afrikaans) to make sure you get chips, not crisps.

Haha trying new food scares me!! I have a weak stomach! :P :'(

Yeah I did think that chips over there are crisps, but I honestly thought that if they put a menu that said "Fish and Chips" that it would be the traditional fish and chips, not fish and a packet of crisps xD.

And nope - not even ready salted. They were cheese and onion. O.o

Where were you, by the way?

I have an image of you in my mind amongst all those lobster-red chavs having their roast beef and Yorkshire pudding at Benidorm and complaining that it's not how their mother makes it.. ..

That's Arroz ala cubana - obviously orriginated in Cuba ;) It's white rice with a tomato sauce - not normally ketchup  Most often served with fried platano as well

That's a beautifully accurate description of the place!

We were on holiday in France once, somewhere near Avaranches and we saw a little house on a junction out in the country advertising 'Fish and Chips Take Away'. We were intrigued and stopped to get some. It was like a little hole in the wall and quite expensive, but we got some kind of really strong tasting game fish (in batter) and some tasty but quite soggy chips (proper chips not fries). It wasn't what I was expecting but we enjoyed it all the same.

I have fish and chips in Crete - usually Tsipoura (gilt head sea bream) grilled over charcoal and proper chips deep fried in olive oil. Rarely have a fish supper here - too greasy from most chippies and the decent ones are too far away for the batter and chips to still be crispy when I get it home. T'other problem is that the only local chippie that does do good F&C is also a Chinese take away and I get distracted by S&S king prawns!!!

i'm laughing, but why on earth would you travel to far flung places and order fish and chips lol?

Because I love Tsipoura!!! ;)

Good job you didn't ask for tossed salad to go with it.
