I've been approached by an aspiring model who wants time in front of the lens to help beef up her portfolio and experience, she's aware that up until now I've been shooting sports (kayaking and canoeing, quite easy really) and that due to lack of equipment, I'd have to shoot available light unless she wants to fork out for a studio.

She's looking at a fashion modeling artistic direction, so any sort of tips to help with this sort of photography?

Have you got a flash?

If you have you can get some good results with fill in flash in daylight.

You will need to have a look at location because that will very much depend on her clothing choice. If it's elegant, then somwhere upmarket will be called for, if it's a bit more funky stuff then industrial settings are a better bet. Cars are not a bad prop either.

Later in the evening with some flash might also be a good idea.

Watch out for shooting angles, most fashion shots are taken from a few inches above the model's eyeline ( I need a stepladder!) and look out for the details like what she is doing with her hands. Certain body shapes suit certain poses so have a good look (objectively of course!) at her body shape and have a research some ladies fashion mags (fun eh?) to find poses and angles you think you can apply.

Does that make kayaking sound easy? lol.

I think we have a flash, but where is another question

It certainly makes kayaking shots sound easy.
