First serious go at layers with GIMP

I'm laid up for a few months so I decided to have a go at fixing an image that nearly came out....

From This thread I took this image that I liked but the sun was way OTT.

I have created and applied a digital ND filter mask layer and come up with this using GIMP:

It's my first go at this sort of thing and I wanted to turn the sun down alot further as it's still overpowering, but I don't think I can go much further. Any more tips?

Pretty good effort there. Can you tell us how you applied a digital ND filter mask layer as i can't find what you mean in Gimp.

I did a search on google for gimp be filter. I'll dig out the link when I put the laptops on.
