First Publication...

Your probably bored seeing threads like this but had to get it off my chest. I got quite a lot more than I bargained for in one week last week...

I mainly shoot motorcycle racing as a hobby, a few months back I sent a couple of photos off to local newspapers. A few days later I got a response saying the paper was going to use a few pics and put my name with them, I asked them to send me a copy of the paper as I couldn't get to the area where they were published to buy one... I'm still waiting for it three or four months later.

So that annoyed me a little and I didn't bother sending anymore as I was a little disheartened... last week I was up at about 2am and I couldn't sleep, I got a few decent photos from a road racing event that happened the weekend before and I was bored so decided I'd send them to all the local papers and take a chance and send them to the 'big names' too.

Well chuffed, then on Monday I got a response from the local paper saying they were using three of my shots and this time I could buy the paper and they done a full page spread with my photos and thier correspondents shots too.

What I'm wondering is, should I be asking for payment? I mean don't get me wrong I'm over the moon getting them published but I might as well make it worth my while if possible... how would I go about asking without sounding rude and how much should I get paid roughly?

Any advice would be appreciated, sorry for going on a bit and thanks for taking the time to look

Congrats on getting published!
And yes you should be getting paid. Next time send them a small preview at 72dpi and then discuss a price.

Well done on getting you pictures in print. I would try to get some money from them. If they didn't use your pictures and wanted to cover the event they would either have to pay someone to cover it, or buy the pictures in from a known agency that had togs in attendance.

It's great getting a photo published, although mine was put on a new page of a race team so not alot of coverage.

Well done, but this is exactly whats causing major issues with the freelance togs pulling out. Yes you should get them to pay something, but unforunetly no doubt how good they are, there is normally someone willing to donate for free, once the price is there expect them to walk. Unless no-one has the pic they want for free.
