Hi guys, I currently own a Nikon D7100 and was wanting to buy an upgraded lens suitable for low light photography (eg inside low light churches, star shots etc).
I have narrowed down to 2 lenses in my budget which are the:
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S NIKKOR (here:http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/71950/Show.html which I believe is designed for the FX full sensor bodies.)
And the Nikon 17-55mm AF-S f/2.8G IF-ED Dx (here: http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/27900/Show.html - which I believe is designed for DX or cropped sensor cameras)

I am hoping to upgrade my camera body next year to the D600 so if I went for the 17-55mm which is £200 cheaper, would this not work correctly on the D600?

Thanks in advance

AFAIK, the 600 is like the 700/800 in that it recognises a DX lens and goes into DX mode. It cuts the megapixels down.I may be wrong in that as I have the 700/800 and have never owned a 600.

The 17-55 is a superb lens, but if your going FF, wait for a 28-70 or 24-70, both are very good lenses.

Another option is the Tamron 28-75, super performer and a fraction of the price.

I had the DX Tamron 17-50 2.8, and shot a wedding using it, no problem focusing in a dimly lit church. For stars, you're going to be using MF.

Supposed to be a cracking lens that tamron 24-70, for the price.

Churches aren't dark - first dances are 'dark'. And the people are moving, so it's continuous focus, so there's no AF assist lamp - that's a test for an AF motor ;).

Churches are easy, and I've no idea why anyone would be using AF on a cheap crop sensor camera - that'd be stupid, like getting up to turn the telly over kind of stupid.

For the first dance on the weddings I shot I used a mix of bounce flash and wide aperture/slightly bumped ISO. Turned out alright. I never use CF, always SF and rarely miss a shot. Not bragging there :D I just can't get on with CF, tried many times.

Regardless the tamron, for the first wedding I shot at least, handled anything the lighting threw at it pretty good. And that was on a D90. For the most recent wedding I had the advantage of having the D800 and 24-70 Nikon.
