First go in the studio, Pics of the other half

Right, i am just getting into to doing photograhy in my freshly set-up studio. I got myself a big flash head the other day, picked it up for £150.

I also made a softbox to go with it too to diffuse it down a bit as it was far to harsh.

Now ive got a couple of questions about fill light, background light and hair light. Now do the three lights in question have to be a flash unit or can they be constant light and if so, i guess they need to be daylight temperature?

I also made this the other day using materials in and around work so it didnt actually cost me anything, but is this actually going to make any difference what so ever as its constant rather than flash and not quite daylight temperature? There are 6 bulbs in all, but just 3 are on on the picture.

Here are a few test shots i did last night with the other half, she wasnt in the mood for posing tbh, i just really wanted a subjust infront of my backdrop so i could test a few shots.

Please, comments and critisism's are more than welcome


This is my first ever time in doing pictures like this


As stated above, here i am using 1 softbox with bowens flash with a reflector to the left of the subject

I'll answer one question. If you are using 3 light sources, and you are aiming for a daylight white balance, then they better be the same type of light. Those tubes will give a greenish tinge if you are using them with a flash head, unless you gel (add a colour filter) to them to alter the colour temp.

To be honest i think im going to ditch the tubes. They were NOT used in the pictures above just to make things clear

So far about the pictures above, i have been told i need to sort out the white balance and also that the pictures have very heavy magneta??

Yep, the colour balance is wrong.

Best to use a grey card to set the white balance, though if you've shot in RAW you can do it in photoshop or similar afterwards.

Yeah, i did shoot in RAW, im using some version of lightroom. Can this do it too?

In Lightroom go to Develop, and use the eyedrooper tool on a neutral colour.

Loads better, maybe a smidge green still. Knock the (green/magenta) the tint slider to the right a bit.

Correct slider, but too much. TBH the middle one isn't that far out.

depending on the effect it can be whatever you want! to be honest if im after critical sharpness and dof ill always stick between f8-f11 and base my light power on that - i find thats a great starting point and pretty much tends to be the sharpest apetures in a lens, going significantly higher will effect the images in a negative way

great start so far, im a big fan of diy flash so its always awesome to see it working well
