Hi all

So I'd like advice on my first full frame camera. Let me give you some info to help....

I have a lot of experience with Nikon and like Nikon. I loved the D7000 when I had it.

I currently have two Nikon lenses. A 50 1.8 and an 85 1.8. Sadly the latter is faulty but still of some use.

I don't want an APSC camera so don't suggest it. Nothing wrong with them, I am just sure I want full frame now. (I am not planning to buy into expensive ff zooms. I am a prime man and can happily survive with 1.8 series primes for the most part)

I shot Sony A6000 before and didn't like the ergonomics but if someone can persuade me to get a Sony A7, I am listening.

I am not so interested in video. It is handy but not very important. I do mostly non-studio portrait work as well as some travel and documentary photography. No sport or fast stuff. I do some cropping but nothing too heavy.

My budget is 900 euro. I am fine with used or factory refurb. Please no suggestions for cameras that are over this price. I am not stretching.

Also, this might be relevant if Nikon or Sony are due to release a new model and the price of the previous one drops again, I have a couple of months before I buy it.

Thanks a lot for the help :)

Personally I would go for used D700 or D3 or maybe D3s in my opinion. Those Nikon FF body is more then capable to do anything. I previously use the D700 and D3 setup but due to weight issue I have sold them and shoot with mirrorless Fuji. If you want more pixel and pretty much same layout and handle as D7000, you can go for D610?

+ 2 for the D700, still a fine camera. (y) (you might to able to pick up a D800 within your budget too, if you don't mind the 36mp)

D600 / 610, used with low shutter count, if you don't need a big spread of focus points. Very civilised output.

D700 is a classic, though, and might feel more reassuring (solid) in the hand ...

In terms of overall IQ (colour depth, DR and noise handling) the D600/D610 are going to be the best that you can get for you budget. However, the D700 is a favourite of many and is built like a tank as is a pro body. Despite the reduced colour depth and DR a lot of people prefer the final image of the D700 to more modern bodies. Resolution is relatively low, but is plenty unless you plan on cropping a lot or printing huge.

D700 is old but still a fine spec, if you don't just look at MP
In fact I know a wedding photographer who traded in his D700's for D800's and then switched back, as they said the "feel of the pictures" was better with the D700 and he didn't need the high MP count

The advantages of the Sony A7, if you see them as advantages and I do :D are the compact size (with a compact lens,) the EVF and all that brings... WYSIWYG, in view histogram, in view DoF, exposure etc., an end to the whole MA faff on and ease of manual focusing with peaking and the magnified view.

My original A7 is easily the best camera I've ever had, the 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8 are outstanding lenses and 24mp is enough for me :D

There is a A7r and A7RII in classified section along with FE55 too
Would make for a very good start at FF shooting ;)

I recently bought a mint D700, the first time I have used one and love it ... there is something about the finished image that I prefer over more recent cameras I have had.
A D700 with the AF of a D500 would be bliss :D

If you have the time to manually focus one of those plus a couple of old manual focus film era lenses, maybe a 28mm f2.8 and a 50mm f1.2/1.4, would make a great start.

D700 is a classic legendary Nikon FF camera. So does the D3 because they use the same sensor. I've own both before and they never let me done. AF is always spot on and image quality is superb. 12mp is enough for my use and I don't need 36mp! The D700 is like £450-500 used and you simply can't get a better FF camera then that .......

Is it something that you can quantify what's so nice about the images from the D700?

I have a D700 which just never gets used. I don't know what it is, perhaps i haven't set it up properly, or not corrected something i changed years ago, but i just can't get what i consider to be a nice picture from it. Something about the colours just look a bit 'off' to me. It's at least 5 years old and the shutter count is about 8000. I just do not have the motivation to pick it up and fettle it, relying on my D7200 as my main body. Odd really. perhaps i should have a look at it.

No problem, you can give it to me. I will take care of it for you.
