It has taken some time but I'm finally going to take the plunge. Up to now I've been using a film scanner but I've got the go ahead from the domestic accountant to buy a DSLR. I am on a limited budget (daughter has passed the strangling cats level and needs a serious violin - and they make camera equipment look quite economical!)

Forget my SLR Canon lenses I'm thinking. Start afresh. Now there's the Samsung GX10. With 2 zoom lenses. Best offer with a 1GB card so far is £599. It really does seem better than anything Canon or Nikon can offer for the price.

Or am I wrong! I would really appreciate advice, comments or criticism.

:canon:

chouglez that really doesn't help! Tell me why Canon would be the best on my budget.

Few reasons Robo.

1. U already have Canon lens (a couple I guess) so U must probably be a Canon user in the past and also why not use them rather them selling them off?
2. I would go with the mases because when push comes to shove (I meant buying selling second hand stuff for your gear) then Canon (or Nikon [read that reluctantly :)] accesories are more easily available or easily sold and that is very handy, trust me on that.
3. On the forum you will get few non-Canon, non-Nikon advise so again go with the masses
4. Canon CashBack is now available so take advantage
5. Kerso does some good prices on Both Canon, Nikon products so do check with him first.
6. When you may go out with group for group photography or may join local camera club then if you have what the next person sitting or walking with you has then you can share each other's accesories like lenses etc and believe me that's a great advantage
I can go on and on but I am sure you will make the right choice when the time of buying will come.

Hope that was a little bit more helpful :)

Thanks Chouglez. That's a good list of valid points. I've been a Canon user but also a Minolta owner. The lenses I have are film not digital and I have been informed of their unsuitability for digital. At the price though, the bangs per buck ratio still seems to be good.

I'd never heard of this camera till I read this thread, but I've just done a quick 'Google' and found it's a re-badged Pentax K10 with a 10 mp sensor.

I'm sure it's an excellent camera, but like others have said I'm at a loss to understand why you don't just go for a Canon body as you already have a couple of Canon lenses. ?

Ah just read your last post. So you don't have any real lens commitment. Assuming it wil take Pentax lenses then it will have a pretty good system of lenses and equipment behind it.

Just think long term and be sure in your choice. :)

You could get yourself a 350D and a couple of lenses for £600 or a D50 and a couple of lenses.

Thanks Chouglez. That's a good list of valid points. I've been a Canon user but also a Minolta owner. The lenses I have are film not digital and I have been informed of their unsuitability for digital. At the price though, the bangs per buck ratio still seems to be good.
Unless your canon lenses are MF they will be ok on digital.

i've just bought a Nikon D50 with a nikon 18-55mm lens & a nikon 55-200mm lens + a 1gb memory card for £430, then the other day i bought a Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro lens for £139 delivered, so thats a grand total of £569 for a very good DSLR and 3 lens's. what more could you ask for.

Having owned a D50 for a year I can't reccomend it enough. I'm sure Canons are great cameras but Nikon D50 is by far the best buy for a first DSLR. There is the new D40X now, a great first camera. As you can see, however, I love Nikon cameras and this is reflected in my opinion. :)

As regards the opinions on the D50, as a fellow user I will back that up 100%.

As a first time DSLR they are lovely cameras and easy to use.

Although I love the D50, I appreciate that Canon make 'canny' cameras too ;) .

Let us know what you opt for!

Anth.

You could try the sony alpha 100 too. Think you can get them for 440 from warehouse express and then get a minolta (D) 75-300 off flea bay for less than a ton and a 2gb CF card from that place in jersey for 20. Jobs a good un! I went for the sony as I'd already got some minolta lenses but I'm really pleased with it.

So I should buy a SonyCanonNikon!!! Well, chaps you've certainly helped me make up my mind. Seriously, it does show that there are a lot of good cameras out there. And thanks for your suggestions. I am going to investigate further. Still think the Pentax\Samsung spec looks very good for the money. And is it right that my AF film lenses will not perform as well as lenses designed for digital?
Cheers
Rod

Your Canon AF lenses should be fine on an EOS digital Royo. Let us know what you've got and someone will be able to confirm suitability or let you know if there may be any issues. :)

Royo, maybe you wanna take your lenses to one of the Jessops stores and check with one of the in-store experts what cameras they can go with and make a more informed decision.

Good idea Chouglez. Thanks for that. And if I save on lenses then perhaps a 30D - at a stretch.

I have a 80-200 non USM and a 28-80 USM. I've read somewhere that the coating is not so good for digital

Glad to be of any help Royo.

Jessops is doing 30D for £699. Kerso is doing it for £635 & 10 postage and remember that whomsover you buy it from there's always £65 cashback.
